PRESPERSPJULY PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:

In my ongoing goal of keeping you apprised of the day-to-day activities of The Pyramid Society, I'll begin by saying this month's message comes with mixed emotions. And in my life-long tradition, when given the option, I'll continue my habit of sharing the bad news first. It is with sincere regret that I inform you of Bridgette Orwig's resignation as Egyptian Event Show Chair and also from the Board of Directors, effective August 31st.

Bridgette began serving in 2008 and soon afterward assumed the role of Show Chair. No one knows the countless hours involved in wearing this hat, but Bridgette wore it proudly and effectively, and both our Event and our organization are stronger because of Bridgette's service.  We will genuinely miss her insight, her tremendous skill set, as well as that great British sense-of-humor! On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, Trustees, and members, I wish to take this opportunity to again say, "Thank you, Bridgette, for a job well done."

I am, on the other hand, pleased to report that Joe Polo has agreed to serve as our Show Chair, beginning with the 2014 Egyptian Event. Joe's varied background as a businessman, long-time trainer, horse show manager, and judge, should serve us well in this capacity.

The other good news I wish to share is that our Event was financially successful this year, thanks to your dedication and participation. However, as you know, our numbers were down this year, primarily due to fewer futurity nominations at the height of the recession, and, no doubt, impacted by today's overall weak economic climate.

As an organization, it is critical that we continually review and critique every decision in our two-pronged goal of strengthening both The Society's financial footing and subsequently, its ability to serve. And the Board and Committee Chairs will begin this process again at our August Board Meeting. Every aspect of the Event will be discussed and evaluated with the above-stated goals in mind. Be assured, however, that remaining as the centerpiece will be the overarching and collective goal of retaining that Event spirit that sets our show apart and makes it unlike any other. And, as promised earlier, I will share with you relevant Board decisions as they are made.

Again, thank all of you for your feedback, your support and continued dedication. It is a pleasure to serve as your President.

Sincerely,

Bob Miars

President
The Pyramid Society

Egyptian Event Feedback

The Pyramid Society is an organization that celebrates a diverse member base with one commonality: a passion for the Egyptian Arabian horse. Still, we're a "mixed bag," as they say! So, it should come as no surprise that Egyptian Event Surveys ran the gamut: some "loved every minute of it;" others saw it as too leisurely of a pace with too much "white space." Some wanted to buy a CD of the music; others felt it was inappropriate or ill-fitting. Some wish there were more educational activities; others feel education could be cut back.

Likewise, some want to "concentrate on performance classes," because "horses ARE athletes;" others want a halter-only showcase of Straight Egyptians. Some want "better food for spectators," others felt they got their fill at the complementary socials and offerings graciously provided by our sponsors. Some want better lighting and decor; and still others notice each tiny enhancement, from year to year, and express appreciation for the effort and time it takes to make our show venue so unique.

And, as it is at any show, judging is a top-of-the-list topic. The winners tend to love it, and others, perhaps not so much. And even the Show Program, which garnered gold stars by all accounts, saw a few negative comments in that it was just plain heavy to lug around! Even mother nature couldn't catch a break... she gave us a wonderful, cool week... but attendees were pretty upset about her raining on the Barn Parties!

Since day one, it is this merging of perspectives that consistently brings about better horses, more knowledgeable breeders and owners, and an overall stronger organization. The staff, board, committees, and show management know and realize, from year to year, that it is impossible to make everyone happy. But we place a high value on each of your comments - whether they be glowing or lack a glimmer of anything positive - as they serve as a barometer of our year-round efforts.

It is important for each of our members to know that your comments are being shared with respective committee chairs in an effort to continually improve the Event. If there are common threads throughout the surveys, then they surely need to be woven into the tapestry of the Event. THANK YOU for giving us your feedback!

We Salute These Straight Egyptian Stallions
The Pyramid Society joins with the entire Arabian horse community in mourning the loss of and saluting the lives of Thee Desperado, Simeon Shai+, and Imperial ImSirdar. These Egyptian Arabians will continue to live on in our hearts and memories. Thanks to these members for entrusting us to share this news with our subscribers. For sending condolences and paying your personal respects, contact information for these members may be found in our online Directory.
Thee Desperado
In what has turned out to be a month of loss in the world of Egyptian Arabian horses, on behalf of his owner, Judy Sirbasku, Arabians Ltd.'s Shawn Crews shared with us the passing of the legendary sire of champions Thee Desperado (The Minstril x AK Amiri Asmarr x TheEgyptianPrince) on Friday, July 26th, 2013 at the age of 24.

"It is with heavy hearts that we sadly announce the loss of our beloved Desperado. He died peacefully this morning, with those who loved him by his side," begins Arabians Ltd.'s Facebook post on Friday. The news rapidly spread over the weekend, creating a swarm of comments and an outpouring of shared photos and memories via social media. As of Monday afternoon, the announcement had been reposted over 400 times across the Arabian horse community.

Thee Desperado's accomplishments in the national show ring were memorable: Egyptian Event Junior Champion Colt in 1991, and Reserve Champion Stallion at US Nationals and Unanimous Grand Champion Stallion at Scottsdale in 1994, most notably.

Nevertheless, it was his tremendous breeding career that kept Thee Desperado in the spotlight, earning him the title of leading Egyptian Event halter sire for 12 years straight, 1996 to 2007. Still, in passing along this prestigious title in 2008, he couldn't stray far from the winner's circle; the honor was bestowed upon Botswana (who has held it since), one of Desperado's many beautiful sons... (continued)

Simeon Shai+
Henry & Christie Metz of Silver Maple Farm in Santa Ynez, CA, wish to relay the passing of their legacy stallion, Simeon Shai+, August 31, 1984 - July 24, 2013...

This week, Henry & I said goodbye to our beloved friend, SIMEON SHAI+. He was a Straight Egyptian Arabian stallion extraordinaire and one of the Arabian breed's most decorated horses. We are devestated by the loss of this kind and noble soul... At the wise age of 28 years, we saw the circle of life drawing closed. Still, no one is ever truly able to prepare for this reality.

Goodbye, sweet boy; you will be missed so very much. We will remember you always with great joy, laughter, and, of course, love! Your spirit touched our hearts so tenderly. You created many memories we will cherish. Those memories are the golden threads that shine sho brightly in the fabric of our lives. We were honored to be your stewards. Thank you for the sons, duaghters, and grandchildren you gave the Arabian horse breed and Silver Maple Farm. They are the living and continued reminders of your presence and God's grace.

The Metzes invite you to visit Simeon Shai's Facebook Page (see link below) to share your thoughts about this great stallion and sire.

Imperial ImSirdar
Merrie & Edward Aiken of Cedar Ridge Farm in Frederick, MD, write to share some sad news concerning their stallion, Imperial ImSirdar (Ansata Imperial X Imperial Sonbesjul by Hossny), who has died at the age of 27.

"June 29th was Imperial ImSirdar's last day. Our handsome bay Egyptian Arabian stallion was put gently to sleep in the afternoon," says Merrie. Sirdar, she shares, was beginning to suffer from thyroid cancer, which he had beaten two years before, but which had returned. "Sirdar was a dressage champion, thanks to Les and Zipporah Wagschal of Shalom Farm Arabians in Canada," Merrie continues, "He was the talented son of Ansata Imperial and Imperial Sonbesjul and sire of beautiful, athletic, sweet-natured sons and daughters."

ImSirdar's legacy will live on best in his son, Cedars Mojave, who is learning to be ridden with Larry Jones. "Thank Heaven we had the opportunity to know and love Sirdar for 25 years."

BPARTICLEWORKING WITH THE STALLION
By Jillian Fogelsanger of Endeavor Horsemanship

When one thinks of a stallion, he often imagines a horse with captivating beauty, energy, and power. The commanding presence of the horse is noticed and respected by all who view him. Because of the very attributes that one admires regarding the nature of the stallion, it is essential that the animal is respectful of the horsemen and handlers surrounding him. The difference in working with a stallion as opposed to a mare or gelding is the evidence of an often more assertive nature, which is caused primarily by the elevated level of testosterone in his system. It is therefore essential that the horseman is completely confident in his ability so that he portrays no hesitation in asserting leadership, while using techniques that consider the nature of the horse. There are many more variables to consider when working with a stallion, and addressed in this article are three of the most important elements... (continued)

MBRSPOTJULY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Timothy Manring, Arabians at Egg & I, Chimacum, WA

"I am no longer surprised, but continue to be amazed at the support provided to me and others by the breeders and other members of the Society."

Tim with Justynn, Bint Bint Justina, and Rhapsodys Crescendaa
Our July Member Spotlight takes us all the way to Washington state, where Timothy Manring lives a lifestyle of Arabian horse breeding at Arabians at Egg & I...

Sometime near the end of a 37-year career of teaching Law at the University of Singapore and University of Indonesia, and of practicing law in both Seattle, Washington, and Jakarta, Indonesia, Tim began to think seriously about a new career: raising Arabian horses. "While still living and practicing law in Indonesia, I decided to focus on Straight Egyptian Arabians," he writes, "I thought they would bring me as close as possible to the original, desert-bred Arabians."

Manring subsequently purchased two Straight Egyptian mares and a 50% interest in two Egyptian-sired mares in 2003, before returning to the United States in 2004. He took his first horse to The Egyptian Event just one year later. She was SHA Aaisfa (Amir Shamez x Kohleena x Anaza El Farid), and she earned a Reserve Championship in World Class Yearling Fillies and in Amateur Halter Fillies 2 and Under. She is currently in foal to Justynn for 2014.

Since his first Event experience, Tim has also worked at increasing his knowledge of Arabian horses, and Straight Egyptian Arabians, in particular. "In 2005, with the help of Shawn Crews, I purchased Bint Bint Justina (Thee Desperado x Alijamila) from Karl and Jacki Brekon," he recalls, "For the next several years Justina produced outstanding foals for me: Justynn (by Alixir), who was Champion Yearling Futurity Colt and Champion Junior Colt at the 2008 Egyptian Event, Justynna (also by Alixir), who was Reserve Champion EBC Filly at the 2010 Egyptian Event, and AliaJustina (by Laheeb Al Nasser), who was 4th Amateur Halter Fillies 2 and Under and 3rd Yearling Futurity Fillies (April-December) at the 2011 Egyptian Event."

While Timothy was away attending the 2012 Egyptian Event, he lost Bint Bint Justina unexpectedly due to a failed kidney. But this was not before she could produce what would be her final embryo, again by Alixir, which had been placed in a recipient mare just a few months before The Event. Bint Bint Justina's last offspring is a colt, born in March of 2013. If all goes well, Justynn Bey (pending) will be showing in the EBC Colts class at the 2014 Egyptian Event... (continued)

Halimaars King Tut to Represent the SE Horse with Tommy Garland at Farm Progress Show
Nancy DeLisi of Delsan Arabians in Naples, FL, writes in with some great news about her stallion Halimaars King Tut (Aga Gamaan x Haallie)...

According to Nancy, Halimaars King Tut (Tut) had a great time at the 2013 Egyptian Event. In addition to his success in the arena (where he scored the Western Pleasure Championship, among other class wins), participants will also recall Tut's role in Tommy Garland's on-site and live-streamed C.P.R. clinics. "Tut has a gentle temperament and, like most Egyptian Arabians, he is smart and loving." Nancy explains, "So, naturally, he delighted in demonstrating these impressive traits as Tommy led him through the drills."

Now, Nancy is pleased to share that Tut's next role will be serving as an ambassador for the Egyptian Arabian Horse by performing at the Farm Progress Show (the nation's largest outdoor farm show) with Tommy Garland at the end of August in Decatur, IL.
