March 7, 2013

The Pyramid Society is saddened to report the passing of Les St. Clair, noted breeder of Egyptian Arabian horses, who died at his home in Utah on March 7.  He was 79.

Les, who with his wife Lois, created a unique herd of Straight Egyptian Arabian horses anchored in antique bloodlines while incorporating newer imported stock, was known both for his entrepreneurial marketing and his indefatigable good humor.  St. Clair horses, characterized most notably by the stallions *El Mareekh,  Ibn El Mareekh, Anaza Bey Shah and the remarkable mares Bint Deenaa and *Deenaa among many others, left a mark on Egyptian breeding that will not soon be forgotten.

On hearing of his death this afternoon, one breeder noted, "Les and Lois had such an abundance of passion for the Egyptian Arabian horse it overflowed to the people around them. At their farm or at the Egyptian Event all were treated the same, no one was better, no one was less.  The open door hospitality had no end at the St. Clair's home and farm."

2013 Egyptian Event

Remember to take note of this year's DATES & DEADLINES included on the left hand column of this newsletter! And, as always, watch for updates online at:

MARCH PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE PRES

Dear Pyramid Society members and Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts,

March brings new foals, extra work on the farm, and even greater anticipation of the upcoming Egyptian Event. March, 2013 marked another very important point in the history of The Pyramid Society. Befittingly, while in Cairo, Egypt, for a new breeders' conference, one of our founders Judith Forbis of Ansata Arabian Stud reaffirmed the validity of ALL Straight Egyptian bloodlines as meeting the parameters set by founding members of The Pyramid Society in 1969. Specifically naming individual horses whose pedigrees have been questioned in recent years, Judi confirmed that those horses are ALL Straight Egyptians as defined by The Pyramid Soicety. The Society continues to uphold the charter of its founding members and stands ready to address any questions regarding the acceptance of any Straight Egyptian pedigrees/bloodlines.

In addition to this momentous gathering, I also want to call your attention to other gatherings by our Straight Egyptian devotees in this country. As you'll see in this month's Chariot, numerous members are taking an active stance at local and regional shows to have a stronger presence for the Straight Egyptian horse. And that's really what it's all about; members who take the time to enjoy their horses and their mutual friends who share this passion for both this horse and our organization. This kind of positive energy serves as a wonderful catalyst for others to join them. If you haven't been actively engaged with your fellow breeders and members in your own community, I encourage you to take this time on behalf of the Straight Egyptian horse to do so.

Scottsdale Party a Bit Hit!

Photos by Randi Clark

The Pyramid Society's "Discover your Egyptian Treasure" party on Thursday, February 21st during the Scottsdale show was a big success, according to party sponsor Allison Mehta-Westley of Talaria Farms. "In combination with the international classes, the party was exemplary of a widely increasing interest in the Straight Egyptian horse," says Allison...

Hosted at the Arabian Horse World magazine booth, the afternoon party focused on the Pyramid Society's Golden Scarab Sweepstakes futurity and Egyptian Breeders' Challenge program, with materials highlighting the stallions currently enrolled. Party-goers were treated to a healthy selection of wine and appetizers, which Allison noted were thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Allison Mehta-Westley with raffle winner Steve Smith
The festive gathering reached its pinnacle with a "treasure draw" for a custom, Scarab-themed halter. The winner of the raffle was Steve Smith of Stone Creek Ranch in Washington. Steve is a breeder of Russian horses, and currently does not own any Egyptian Arabians. Perhaps that will change soon... and no matter, we congratulate Steve on his new treasure!

This party represents yet another important outreach by The Pyramid Society to non-straight breeders. Allison noted that the atmosphere was one of excitement and learning, and she especially appreciated the members who took the time to come out and support the effort. The Pyramid Society would like to once again especially thank Allison Mehta-Westley for her generous sponsorship of this party.

Look for The Pyramid Society and its members promoting the Egyptian Arabian horse at the Alabama All Arabian Horse Show in just a few short weeks, and then again in April at the Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup.

MAKE A LASTING IMPACT
DONATE TO THE 2013 SHOWCASE AUCTION!

The Pyramid Society's Annual Silent Showcase Auction at The Egyptian Event continues to grow in popularity each year, attracting some of the most important international equine artists.

Each year, we strive to bring you unique pieces that represent the beauty of the Egyptian Arabian horse, as well as items that exemplify the history and culture of this special breed and community.

BUT, this annual fundraiser would not be consistently successful without YOUR support. Above and beyond the acclaimed artists that contribute to the auction, we are also honored to receive numerous donations from members each year!

Member donations are particularly special because we often have the opportunity to see unique, rare, and often historically significant items become treasured by another member through the auction.

With the Event just around the corner, we encourage you to consider the treasures in your home that might make a contribution to the funds raised in our Showcase Auction.

If you have questions about a potential donation, please contact Anna at The Pyramid Society, 859.231.0771 or anna@pyramidsociety.org, so we may explore the possibilities. Donation forms are available HERE. Thank you again for your support in so many ways.

Lisa Abraham Reviews the 2012 Breeders' Conference

The Pyramid Society's National Egyptian Breeders Conference, "Creating Excellence: Standards in Egyptian Arabian Breeding", sponsored by Markel Insurance from October 12-14, was another outstanding educational event. It was hosted by Hank and Sandy DeShazer in Tomball, Texas at their gorgeous farm, which is home to the prestigious  DeShazer Arabian horses. Attendance was not only high, representation was not only global, but, most impressively, this conference transformed some of the world's most successful breeders, prominent judges and esteemed professionals into teachers.

Keri Wright, of Cariswood Arabians and the Educational Director of the Pyramid Society shared, "The Pyramid Society's slogan of 'Your Passion is Our Purpose' really is the impetus behind all that we do as an organization, and it couldn't possibly have greater application than in our commitment to meeting the ongoing educational needs of our members. We earnestly strive to quench the thirst we all have for greater knowledge and understanding as it relates to our passion for all things pertaining to our involvement with the Egyptian Arabian horse..."

Lisa is an international Journalist and Photographer from the United States. She is also a breeder of Straight Egyptian Arabians.

Kendra Wells, Five Wells Farm, LLC - Andalusia, AL

" I love the feeling that we are
all on the same team...
"

Our March Member Spotlight finds us in Adalusia, AL, at Five Wells Farm, LLC, where owner and breeder Kendra Wells enjoys a life full of Egyptian Arabian horses...

"There are two separate occasions that got me involved with Straight Egyptian Arabians," Kendra recalls, "The first was at the age of 11 - my parents gave me a gelding to show for Christmas! I was a horse crazy kid at the time... this gelding was a Straight Egyptian, and I ended up owning him for 34 years. He was put down at the happy age of 40 just a few years ago."

Kendra notes that through her life, she has been drawn specifically to the Straight Egyptian Arabian. So, it makes sense that Kendra's second exposure to the Straight Egyptian is truly a love story... "I had fallen in love with a horse, and this horse happened to be a stallion. I did not need a stallion, or another horse, for that matter, but it was love at first sight, so I bought him! He was the true beginning of my desire to breed horses. His name was BH Torino."

Kendra recalls her proudest moment being when BH Torino's first foal - a filly - won her class at the Egyptian Event as a yearling. "I have owned a few horses that have done well on a regional and national level, but this was my proudest moment..."

Take Advantage of Free Courses on Equine Nutrition
Cheryl Corcoran of Al Ameen Arabians in Blythewood, SC, writes in to share with other members information about free learning opportunity on Equine Nutrition available online from Coursera. Coursera is a website that offers university level courses, taught by professors from prominent universities around the world, but at no cost to the student...

Cheryl writes, "I recently completed a five week course on Equine Nutrition taught by a veterinary professor from the University of Edinburgh. The course was very informative and really explained how the horse is designed to eat and what constitutes good nutrition for broodmares, foals, stallions, and performance horses. It also helped explain problems that can arise from poor nutrition choices, such as laminitis, older horses who can't put/keep weight on, and colic."

For any who are interested, the best part of this news is that the course is FREE!  "You receive a certification of completion and you gain valuable information that helps those of us who care for horses and are always looking for better ways to keep our babies healthy and happy," says Cheryl, "I shared this information on Facebook and thought it would be great to share it with my fellow Pyramid Society members since most of us are breeders and caretakers."

Use the link below to get more information and to watch a brief video on this course, along with a registration link. "The course is a "work at your pace" type environment with forums available for you to ask the tutors/teacher questions as well as get answers from around the globe from fellow students," adds Cheryl, "Needless to say I really liked it and can't wait for additional classes.".

New Arrivals and Successful Sales for LD Arabians

Louise DeRusseau of LD Arabians in Cedar Creek, TX, writes to share of the farm's first foal of 2013, Hana Magidaa LDA (Mishaal HP x Illa Magidaa LDA) and also to announce the sale of Saleem LDA...

"LD Arabians welcomed our first foal for 2013 on January 26th - A grey filly!  We have named her Hana Magidaa LDA, which means Magidaa's bliss/happiness. Hana is by Mishaal HP out of the mare Illa Magidaa LDA," reports Louise. Hana came via embryo transfer, and LD Arabians is expecting a full sibling to Hana, carried by Illa Magidaa LDA, in early March. "These foals will be our last foals by Mishaal HP. We are extremely saddened by his passing a few weeks ago. Both foals are also are full siblings to Noor Magidaa LDA, who is a multi-national halter champion."

"We also are announcing the sale of the gelding Saleem LDA (Thee Desperado x Minstris Petunia LDA) to Pamela Leihbacher of North Carolina. Pamela is so excited to own this gorgeous gelding and looks forward to many days on the trails with him." Louise notes that Saleem LDA was started under saddle by Travis Braden of Braden Training Center and will now spend a couple months with Brennan Gibbs to get him going well on the trails before moving to North Carolina.

SE Legacy Bloodstock Welcomes the First Foals by Amer Shahed
Charles and Carey Niman of SE Legacy Bloodstock in Bell Buckle, TN, announce the arrival of Amer Shahed's first two foals - two fantastic fillies!

"There is no doubt that Amer Shahed has performed well in the show ring with his most recent win at the 2012 Egyptian Event where he was named Unanimous Champion Extended Specialty Stallions 3 Years Old; however, the true success of a stallion is measured by the quality of his get," says Charles. "Keeping that in mind," Carey adds, "we were more than a little nervous as we waited for those February foals; we were rewarded with two gorgeous fillies! Yasmin Al Shahed is out of GEA Jubilee and Malakeh Al Shahed is out of Qadar Kamra - and both are doing great." When asked how they feel about the quality of these fillies, Carey and Charles are quick to smile and say, "Shahed did good!"

Two more foals by Amer Shahed are expected later this year, and Charles and Carey promise photos of the fillies will be up on their web site at www.selegacy.com by the end of March.

A & D Arabians Announces Kamal Ibn Adeed's Return To Stud Service
In his latest submission, Dennis Fournier of A & D Arabians in Penn Valley, CA, reflects on the enjoyment of having Kamal Ibn Adeed home for the winter and on the excitement of seeing his future get continue the legacy established by A & D Arabians' foundation stock...

Dennis writes, "At A & D Arabians there is an excitement at the ranch, but it is mixed with a sadness. Kamal Ibn Adeed has been home for the winter, and it has been so enjoyable having him here. His daily greeting is a delight as each morning he nickers and whinnies to his first "servant" for the day. There are so many things that we appreciate about him, but the one thing that stands out is just how much of a gentleman he is. Whether it is leading him or talking to mares, he is always sensitive and respectful to the people around him."

Dennis reports that in March, Kamal Ibn Adeed goes back to being a breeding stallion, leaving the ranch for Seven C Stallion Station and on to the work of fulfilling breeding commitments...

Unfortunately, there will be no foals arriving at Alli~Barr Arabians this foaling season, but Barry is looking forward to breeding the mares LS Zeynah and Safaara this season for Spring, 2014 foals.

"Last years foal, El Zarif BJ (registration pending) has grown beyond all my expectations," reports Barry, "he is a big boy at almost 13.5 hh. Following the recent loss of Mishaal HP, Darlene is among many breeders to celebrate the quality of his get. "One of Mishaal's last breedings is a full sister to Makeda DB and is now in training at Arabians LTD and available for purchase. She is a contender for the 2013 EBC class at the Egyptian Event," notes Darlene.

DNJ Arabians is also excited and waiting any day now for the foal that will be a full sibling to last years 2012 EBC Champion filly, Amirah Gemaal DB (Bellagio RCA X Silkh SWA).  Amirah was also bred by Darlene and owned by the Gobers.

Marilyn Lang of Fantasia Arabians in Sealy, TX, writes in to detail the sale of a pair of Fantasia Arabians' yearlings to Sue Bryson and Karen Puleo of Lyndale Arabians in Caldwell, TX...

Fantasia Arabians would like to announce the sale of the lovely, black 2012 EBC filly, FA Negmah Haliima. Karen and Sue have also purchased a black Straight Egyptian 2012 colt, FA Hafeed Fadaalim, out of one of Fantasia Arabians' last Fa Daalim daughters, FA Aanisah and sired by Sir Habbas Pasha (by AK Sirhalima).

"Negmah and Hafeed are Karen and Sue's first Straight Egyptian Arabians," explains Marilyn, "They are long time breeders of Crabbet lines. It was not easy to turn loose Negmah, but she will be loved and adored by her new caretakers. We wish them much success and a bright breeding future. They certainly have gotten off to a great start!"

Danny Cable and Walt Bagar of Asante Arabians in Shelbyville, TN, are proud to announce the addition of a new stallion to their 2013 breeding program: Heir Born.

Superior quality in the foundation of his pedigree, combined with his beautiful attitude, well set neck, clean and masculine head that is full of nobility and balanced physique make him a breeder's dream!" says Walt.

Heir Born will be standing at stud at Summerwind Farms and will participate in a limited breeding program in 2013. Heir Born joins KMF Ali Calypso (by Calypso Dance by Makhsous, out of the Ruminaja Ali daughter, C Princess Rakia), already standing at Summerwind.

MR Asmar Performing Top-Notch in 2013, Returns to Stud
Sara Wolff of Meadow Rose Arabians in Cedar City, UT, writes in to share some of the recent accomplishments of MR Asmar (Dal Noir x DB Isismoniet), 1993 black Straight Egyptian stallion...

"MR Asmar has successfully shown in Dressage , Sport Horse, Sport Horse Under Saddle, Hunter, and Western Pleasure in both Arabian and Open shows. Now he's showing and winning in Trail with Lou Roper! He shows in both open and amateur classes. His more recent accomplishments include: Sierra Empire Champion, Scottsdale Top Ten, and Scottsdale Champion Limit Horse in 2013, and this is all on top of many wins in local and regional shows," says Sara.

A few years ago, Sara and Lonnie decided to retire from breeding in the wake of illness and the struggling economy. "However," Sara informs, "people have asked about Asmar and brought to our attention his rare pedigree and his outstanding performance record. So, we have decided to once again stand him." Sara says they plan only to use AI, shipped or frozen semen. "At his age I feel it is too dangerous for him to breed in hand. He is a gentleman; I worry about what some of the mares will do!"

For more information on Meadow Rose Arabians or the horses there, please contact Sara or Lonnie Wolff at 435-559-2882 or info@meadowrose.com..".

Lesley Bennett Congratulates Michelle Watson on a Special Purchase
Lesley Bennett of Bennett Fine Jewelry extends a warm "congratulations" to Michelle Watson and Cliff McCurdy of Victoria Arabians, LLC in Williston, FL, on their purchase of the first bracelet in a new, one-of-a-kind series featuring and honoring the legacy of the Egyptian Arabian horse...

"I have been working on a collection devoted to the Egyptian Arabian," writes Lesley, "I finished this, the first bracelet in the collection, shortly before Scottsdale." Lesley had no intention of displaying the piece at Scottsdale, since the compaion peices for the collection are still works-in-progress. But... "When Cliff came by our booth to visit, I took the bracelet out of the safe to get his opinion. He looked at it and said "I want it for Michelle". As you can well imagine, I am very encouraged by this!" In response, Lesley plans to take a small display for this line to the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas this April, and she will also have a booth at The Egyptian Event. Lesley gladly invites all members to stop by and see the collection taking shape!

Horse Tales Literacy Project Continues Expansion
Laura Graves of Round Mountain Arabians and the Horse Tales Literacy Project write to share about the advance of the Horse Tales Literacy Project...

"Horse Tales Literacy Project is moving forward as programs in OK and MO continue to grow. There is now an active program in IL, and we would love to welcome our Straight Egyptian owners as it is a unique way to introduce children and future SE Arabian owners to the magic of the Arabian."

"Giving books to children is the only proven component that impacts students reading level," writes Laura, "The Horse Tales program's latest news is a program in conjunction with the Diamond Girl Scouts that includes three states, AR, TX and OK, and could be implemented in any state. 4-H groups are also affiliated with Horse Tales, as 4-H members volunteer... often older children mentor the youngsters, providing a unique opportunity for both."

"Offering Horse Tales Literacy Project in your area can have an impact on your community and encourage interest in your horses, a wonderful combination. We are happy to share with you our experience and would welcome your inquiry."

If you would like to learn more, you are encouraged to contact Laura and Gene Graves at 870-746-4500, 870-213-5216, or rmarab@hughes.net.
