Please join with us in celebrating the lives of these influential figures in the Arabian Horse community. MARY LOU ALBAHARY December 26, 2012 Owner of Arabian Carousel, Mary Lou was a long time breeder and supporter of The Pyramid Society, having attended her first Egyptian Event in 1981. She was passionate about her love of Egyptian Arabians, having owned and bred them for 45 years. At the time of her passing, she maintained a small herd of horses, including Nora Halima, one of the last daughters of Ansata Ibn Halima. February 5, 2013 Best known as owner of Al-Marah Arabians, Bazy was one of the most prolific breeders in the overall Arabian industry, with over 2,800 registered foals." Perhaps more important than the number of registered foals was the indelible mark she left in promoting the industry at large. The entire breed owes her a tremendous debt of gratitude. WILLIS FLICK February 11, 2013 Willis Flick and his wife, Imogene "Jimmie", spent much of their time at their Glenglade Farm near Coral Gables, Florida, where the horses were an important part of their family life. They were fine ambassadors of the Straight Egyptian in the show ring and as breeders. Their foundation stallion Ansata El Naseri (Ansata Ibn Sudan x *Ansata Bint Bukra) sired winners in performance, halter, endurance and racing and was a favorite mount of Jimmie's for pleasure riding. Willis became the first Pyramid Society Treasurer and his legal experience was invaluable to the board. |

THE 2013 EGYPTIAN EVENT
Now available for review/download at TheEgyptianEvent.com:
|
FEBRUARY PRESIDENT'S CORNER
|
Dear Pyramid Society members and Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts,
With start of the New Year it means that June and The Egyptian Event are not far away. The committees have been hard at work and have completed their plans which include some exciting changes. In an effort to improve the judging system during the Event, there will be several changes, starting with the "Standard of Excellence" as the standard for judging the Event. I encourage you to purchase this booklet from our Marketplace, if you haven't already done so. Further, the use of seven judges (4 as Event judges and three separate EBC) will be accomplished with five rotational judges beginning in 2013. Three will be judging halter, one will be monitoring for rule violations, and one will be sitting out at any given time. A single judge will continue to judge the performance classes. The EBC judges will be drawn from the panel and all five judges will be used for the Championships. There will also be an additional judging category implemented by AHA which is "balance at the walk". A TPS member also suggested the presentation of the horses to the judges to be in the same order in which the horses entered the ring for all classes. This will also become a policy in 2013. It is important to understand and appreciate the fact that the Egyptian Event scoring system is completely unique within the overall industry. The judges are faced with this unique system and the difficulty of establishing a comfort level with our scoring system. The Board will continue to evaluate in its ongoing goal of assuring more consistency in the Event judging panels. I am also excited to announce our two newest Board members, Cynthia Culbertson (below, left) and Jaleen Hacklander (below, right). Both have been active, dedicated members and will be assuming key responsibilities on the Board. Cynthia will chair the International Outreach Committee with an immediate priority of developing the goals of the Strategic Alliance with the Egyptian Arabian Horse Pyramid Foundation of Egypt. Jaleen will continue to serve on the Membership Committee and will assume the responsibility of the EE Center Ring design and the Educational Committee EE Photo Exhibit. Please join me in showing our appreciation for their continued dedication to the Pyramid Society and the Egyptian Arabian horse. In an effort to keep the membership better informed of the Board plans and actions, per a member's suggestion, a condensed summary of each Board meeting will be available in the " Members Only" section of the TPS website, starting with our January meeting. I want to encourage all members to assist in strengthening The Pyramid Society through direct member involvement, which is essential for any membership-based organization. The Board has adopted a revised committee structure with each Board member assuming direct responsibility for the key roles of The Pyramid Society. The Standing Committees are requested to provide action plans with funding requirements for Board approval, thus eliminating committee work at the Board level. Your suggestions are referred to the appropriate committee for consideration and I would also encourage your direct involvement. Our success will be a collaborative joint effort based on our personal commitment to the Egyptian Arabian horse. Looking forward to seeing you at the Event for our celebration of the "Mares: Queens of the Nile!"

The Trustees Award, one of The Pyramid Society's highest honors, is awarded each year during The Egyptian Event Fundraiser Gala. The award seeks to acknowledge and formally recognize the lifetime of achievements and the passionate dedication of its recipients - both to The Pyramid Society and to our beloved horses. This year's recipient, lifelong Arabian horse photographer Polly J. The Pyramid Society Introduces a Student Membership Category
"The Youth are our future" both summarized and justified the Board's recent discussion to more effectively engage the Youth of The Pyramid Society on a year-round basis. And their first convincing step to validate that commitment was the approval of a $25 annual Student Membership, effective immediately! A $150 credit will be applied for full-time students under 28 years of age who join as Supporting members, with valid Student ID. Students may find this updated Membership Application on our website (CLICK HERE).
The second part of the equation is to also engage the youth whose families are actively involved with The Pyramid Society by planning year-round activities for them. Enter Jillian Whitlow of Timberlake, North Carolina, our new Youth Chair. Jillian has been involved with Arabians since she was three years old and proudly claims "Growing up owning Arabians and showing them has just been a part of my life". She began her involvement in the local Region 16 Youth Association at the age of six and participated throughout her formative years, later holding the titles of Vice President and President of the Empire State Arabian Horse Youth Association. Marrying in 2007, she and her husband bought their first Egyptian mare and began their small breeding business under the Empire Egyptians umbrella. Jillian, now a mother herself, teaches kids riding lessons as well as runs summer camps where she teaches youth the importance of horses. With that background, Jillian quickly states, "I am so excited at the opportunity to be able to 'pump' up the Youth division and have so many ideas and can't wait to get started. I want the Youth to be as excited as I am and have been through the 25 years of my involvement. Well, Jillian, we can't wait for you to get started either!
The overarching goal is to have age-appropriate, educational and 'fun' year-round activities for all interested youth. These activities will take place via the web, possibly other horse shows, and at the Egyptian Event. However, in order to effectively achieve this, the first step is to obtain some basic statistical information about our Youth. We are requesting Moms, Dads, Aunts and Uncles to share these exciting new developments with the Youth in your lives. And secondly, strongly encourage them to help us get started in planning 2013 Youth activities by completing a brief questionnaire (CLICK HERE) and returning to Jillian via regular mail or e-mail by the end of February. As Jillian so succinctly concludes, "I truly believe that the Youth are our future of the Egyptian breeders, exhibitors, and judges, and the ones who will be running the future companies and The Pyramid Society. If we get them involved at an early age they are more likely to stay within the group and participate as adults."
Special thanks to Keri Wright, Education Chair, Lisa Cifrese, Membership Chair, and to Jillian Whitlow, Youth Chair, for your efforts in implementing these important new developments. And equally as important; thanks to our adult supporters for encouraging this next generation to become more involved; whether it be through youth activities or through their own Student Membership within The Pyramid Society. Indeed, "The Youth are our Future." Let's plan accordingly.

" It is difficult to even describe the excitement that surrounded The Event in the early days. The stallions filled the big barn and people got the opportunity to see horses they only would have read about... "
For our February Member Spotlight, we'll take a trip to sunny California, where you'll find the rolling hills of Anne Wright & Dennis Fournier's A & D Arabians, nestled in Penn Valley in Sonoma County. A & D Arabians began in the mid 1990's, but its story goes back considerably further...Dennis Fournier first became involved with Arabian horses as a subscriber to Arabian Horse World magazine in the late 70's. It was around then that he and his partner Charles Grande began a search that took them throughout the country and ended in the purchase of three Straight Egyptian mares and one three-month-old colt (Ansata Halim Bey x Ansata Nile Jewel). Along with these purchases came a move from San Francisco to a 100-acre ranch in Sonoma County in the middle of California's wine country. This was the birth of Warm Springs Stud. "After looking at horses throughout the country," recalls Dennis, "we decided on Egyptian horses because of their value, reputation for beauty, and show wins. We felt fortunate to find our foundation stock, because at that time, just finding horses available for sale was a challenge..."

Using Herbs to Improve the Success of Your Breeding Program
by Jamie Roberts, Nirvana Natural Nutrition, LLC.Breeding horses is a challenging business, and we are ultimately at the mercy of Mother Nature. As breeders, our main goals are to assure good fertility in our breeding stock, have safe and uneventful pregnancies and foalings, and produce strong, healthy, beautiful foals. Fortunately, there is a way we can utilize Mother Nature to our advantage by using medicinal herbs . Herbalism (the study or practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of plants), has a 5,000 year old history, having been used by ancient societies such as China, India, Greece, and even Egypt. The ancient Egyptians wrote extensively about the benefits of herbs in the Ebers Papyrus, which documented more than 700 herbal remedies. Herbs used by the ancient Egyptians such as Garlic, Frankincense, Myrrh, Licorice Root, Chamomile, Thyme, and Willow Bark are used in human and equine herb formulas today...

Bashyr Ali Safeen Proving Himself Under Saddle! Al Mahab Arabians (Newalla, OK) is pleased to announce that the young stallion, Bashyr Ali Safeen (AA Al Bashyr x Alis Zaafinah), is proving himself under saddle with amateur owner/rider Lisa Weinrich. "Safeen is a very rambunctious and playful four year old colt, but put him to work under saddle and he shows his love of mental stimulation and new challenges. He's responsive and intelligent and a confident trail horse, which really makes riding fun," reports Lisa.
Lisa experienced a near-tragic horseback riding accident 12 years ago that has made getting back in the saddle a challenge. "I have been riding since I was two years old, but the mental challenge of getting back into riding after such a scary horseback riding experience was difficult for me to overcome. I definitely take precautions when I ride now as opposed to taking risks when I was younger..."

Event at Paradise Arabians Brings Women and Horses Together Wanda Kenworthy of Paradise Arabians in Lafayette, GA, writes in to share about a new monthly gathering at Paradise they are calling "Southern Ladies Up To Something." "Our goal is to bring a new friend to introduce to the horses or someone that LOVES horses," says Wanda. The group's second meeting took place on February 9th at Paradise Arabians with seven new ladies in attendance...
"We met at 1:00; everyone brought in beautiful food to share, and we had a feast! We then "attempted" to make a "simple scarf." Well, let me tell you, either the engineers and bankers couldn't dumb down, or the directions were just not "simple"..."
After lunch, Wanda led the group out to see a new Lady Sexton / Scapa colt who was born the day before. Heather Harness, midwife at Paradise, explained in detail to the ladies what to look for when your mare is due, what to have in your foaling kit, and how to care for a newborn baby. Those who were interested then had an opportunity to play, brush, and ride, and the others went back inside to visit with one another over food and wine...
