JANUARY PRESIDENT'S CORNER PRES

Dear Pyramid Society members and Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts,

The powerful word "ideas" comes to my mind with both of my topics in this month's President's Corner.

Allison Mehta-Westley at the 2012 National Breeders' Conference - Photo by Lisa Abraham
Regretfully, I advise you that Allison Mehta-Westley has resigned from the Board of The Pyramid Society.  Allison, along with her husband Curt, have been incredibly active members of The Pyramid Society since joining in 1999.  Allison was elected to the board in November 2005 and has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Egyptian Arabian horse and this organization.  Her skill as a breeder; her financial support; her creativity and diligence, both before, during and following The Egyptian Event (including the decorating of the arena);  the birth of the Kalkata and the Golden Scarab Sweepstakes (GSS); as well as her first-class open houses at Talaria showcasing the Straight and Egyptian-Sired horses; her acumen as a businesswoman; and more recently, her spearheading the Sylvia Zerbini finale; all serve as examples of Allison's powerful ideas and of her ability to bring these ideas to fruition. We will miss her greatly as a Board member but rest assured we will continue to be rewarded by Allison's ideas and talents as she works on behalf of the Egyptian Arabian horse and The Pyramid Society. Allison will also continue to serve on several committees, including the EE ceremonies and the GSS. Indeed, Allison, you are very much appreciated.

As everyone knows, ideas fuel additional ideas, and sometimes all you need to open the door is just one more good idea.  The Pyramid Society understands the importance of its role on the world-wide stage as attested in our Mission Statement, which reads in part, "We envision The Pyramid Society as the leader of a worldwide community of breeders, owners, and devotees united in the pursuit of excellence."  We believe the door to that next step - those next great ideas - has been opened by our friends in Egypt who wish to form a Strategic Alliance between The Pyramid Society and the Egyptian Arabian Horse Pyramid Foundation of Egypt. This inaugural step was launched at our November 2012 Board Meeting and, although in its infant stages, much groundwork has already been laid for this template to be successful both in Egypt and/or other countries. I will continue to keep you apprised of updates and am encouraged in saying it is the beginning of a stronger Pyramid Society  presence on the world-wide stage with Egyptian Arabian horses

Enjoy your horses, realizing they provide both joy and friendships that last a life time!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The Egyptian-Sired Futurity Program

The Pyramid Society constantly strives to create additional opportunities for its members through new and creative marketing and showing opportunities.  The new Golden Scarab Sweepstakes Program (GSS) is such an opportunity.  We appreciate the stallion owners who have enrolled their stallions in this new program in its inaugural year and encourage both stallion owners and breeders to consider the opportunities available with the GSS by visiting our website www.pyramidsociety.org.

As you'll note, by encouraging outside breedings to our Straight Egyptian Stallions, the goal becomes one of increased participation (and prize money) with our Egyptian-Sired horses.  As a bit of a caveat here, you also know the Egyptian-Sired futurity, in its present format, has not remained nearly as strong as our Straight futurities.  In essence, the Egyptian-Sired Futurity will now be incorporated into the GSS program. There will be no new Egyptian-Sired futurity nominations in the old format.

Please note, however, the horses already enrolled in the Egyptian-Sired futurity, including those new 2013 foals, will be eligible to compete in their respective classes at the Egyptian Event (both as yearlings in 2014 and as two-year-olds in 2015).  Bottom line, the Egyptian-Sired futurity will play itself out for all existing futurity-nominated and sustained horses in their respective age divisions.  However, rather than accepting new nominations for 2014 foals in the previous Egyptian-Sired futurity, per se, they will now become eligible for participation within the GSS program when bred to GSS enrolled stallions.  We look forward to keeping you updated on this new program and more importantly, look forward to your participation in it.

Also, to further clarify, there will be no changes to the Straight Egyptian Futurities. Please contact The Pyramid Society offices at 859.231.0771 if you have further questions about the GSS.

Visit the 2013 Egyptian Event Europe

Make plans now to participate in the joint efforts of The Pyramid Society and Dowdstown House Stud, Ireland, for a planned progressive trip to The Egyptian Event Europe in 2013!

The goal is to coordinate a ten day/two-week trip consisting of four destinations. Travelers would begin in Ireland with a visit to Dowdstown House Stud, and then continue on to Italy, then to Germany, and finally to Brussels, to spectate at the EEE.

Watch for details to be posted here in The Chariot and also to be updated online at pyramidsociety.org/events as plans come together. If you have questions about this opportunity or are interested in having details emailed to you as they become available, send a message to info@pyramidsociety.org or call The Pyramid Society office at 859-231-0771.

Brenda & Jerry Dumas and Lora Gilbert
Rose of Cairo Arabians, Peralta, NM

"At this point, I don't intend to stand a stallion, which is one reason I love attending the Egyptian Event - to see all the horses in attendance..."

For our first Member Spotlight of 2013, we'll visit Brenda & Jerry Dumas and Lora Gilbert at Rose of Cairo Arabians in Peralta, NM. Not having been born into a "horse family," Brenda Dumas still recalls being "obsessed and horse crazy." She decided, at the tender age of 10 and while living in the suburbs of New Orleans, that she wanted to be an Arabian Horse Breeder. "As it says in Ecclesiastes, 'To every thing there is a season,'" muses Brenda...

Brenda was finally able to begin her adventure into horse ownership some 30 years after that initial childhood dream, but now she's not turning back! Her first horse was a riding gelding, who she lost through an unfortunate pasture accident after just one year. "I was devastated. But I wouldn't have bought my first Straight Egyptian filly a few years later if that hadn't happened, so I can't question why," says Brenda.

Brenda was introduced to Straight Egyptian Arabians in the late 1990's through an ad in the Wall Street Journal inviting readers to visit Cadron Creek Arabians in Quitman, Arkansas. "There I saw the most breathtaking group of Arabian horses I had ever seen in my life! Al Baraki, The Minstril, Gatsby CC, The Source, *Shahir IASB... gorgeous mares and enchanting foals... I had found heaven on earth!"

After a few visits to Cadron Creek, Brenda had the opportunity to invest in a breeding program called The Imari Partnership, through which she later acquired a beautiful, very typey bay yearling filly by the magnificent, black Thee Desperado son, Al Baraki, and out of *Gemma SA, by *Shahir. "This was in 2004, and being that those two stallions were my favorites at the farm, I was ecstatic! So began the journey with my beloved new future foundation mare, Barakis Gem...."

HORSE SAFETY SPECIAL FEATURE

Skilled Rescue Team Helps Young Egyptian Mare at Two Silos
Gail Mailloux of Two Silos Farm in Rogersville, MO, writes to share an inspiring and helpful story of risk and rescue. We encourage all members to take the time to read this article, which describes a scenario which could impact any horse owner. Gail and Joe wish everyone the best and safest 2013, and hope that by sharing their experiences, the whole community may benefit.

The winter holidays invariably bring a hectic rush of shopping and family gatherings. However, on the morning of December 2, 2012, Joe and I had commented on what a beautiful, quiet morning it was. The employees were off for the day, and we had taken just a few moments longer to enjoy our coffee. Joe volunteered to start the feeding, letting me finish my second cup before our typical day began. Minutes later I got a frantic call from his cell phone: "Lluna's down in her stall and it's really bad. Get out here now!" That was the last of "quiet" for the next few hours.

What I saw when I reached the barn was a young mare flipped over on her back, hanging by her back leg from the bars of the stall divider. Somehow, someway, Lluna Bint Hadidi had rolled or kicked, pushing her small, unshod back hoof through the bars. In the struggle it had slipped down and she was trapped, hanging by her heel. It was obvious by her condition she had thrashed through the night, and, in helpless exhaustion, she had given up...

Lyday Farms Triumphant at the Katy Christmas Show!
Lyday Farms in Honey Grove, TX, is happy to announce their success this past November at the Katy Christmas Show. The show is sponsored by the Gulf Coast Arabian Horse Club every year in Katy, TX, which is located west of Houston...

Lyday Farms' three year old grey stallion, LF Al Saher (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x LF Majik Star), shown by Bryan Jeffries, won Grand Champion Stallion. The beautiful mare, OSO Edessa (Laheeb IASB x Elwira SF), shown by Bryan and owned by Raymond Mazzei of Furioso Farms, won Grand Champion Mare, and right behind her, Besada de Desperado AP, owned by Christen and Rich Benat of Arabian Partners, took the Reserve Champion title.

Lyday also dominated in the amateur mare classes. Pasquina AR (Hadidi x LF Estrella Bonita), won her yearling class and was shown to a win as Reserve Champion by owner/handler Melinda Jeffries, and Besada de Desperado AP was shown to a Championship by Christen Benat.

Both Melinda and Christen would like to give special thanks to trainer Bryan Jeffries for his patience and dedication in coaching them to show their horses and for steering them all to success. "We are proud of our horses' effort, their willingness to work in the ring, and the impresson they made at the show," says Melinda, "To sum it up, the whole experience has us looking forward to next year's show season!"

Both Edessa and Besada will be making their debut in Scottsdale this coming February. Stay tuned!

Kamal Ibn Adeed Standing at Stud in California for 2013
Dennis Fournier of A & D Arabians in Penn Valley, CA, is pleased to announce that Kamal Ibn Adeed will be standing at stud in California for the 2013 breeding season. "He will be in the capable hands of Reproductive Specialist Dr. Mary Scott," says Dennis, "One long-time breeder told me personally that Dr. Scott is the most knowledgable vet that she had ever worked with."

Dr Scott already has frozen semen from Kamal and A & D plans to store even more this year. "The facility is Seven-C Equine Services, and it is just an hour away, so we can easily get back and forth when necessary. We are particular about everything having to do with Kamal and we are confident that he will be cared for as well at Seven-C as he was at Michael Byatt Arabians last year."

Kamal Ibn Adeed will be bred to a limited number of mares in 2013, and Dennis expects bookings to fill early. Contact A & D Arabians for more information!
