Pen Bay and Waldo County Form Collaboration Committee

Over the past month, Mark Biscone has been talking with community members in public forums and with employees in town hall meetings about the collaborative partnership formed between Pen Bay Healthcare and Waldo County Healthcare. A collaboration committee was formed including equal board, clinical and administrative representatives from each organization. The committee will pursue ways to leverage the strengths of PBH and WCH to meet community needs while maintaining the highest level of quality healthcare services in Knox and Waldo counties.

If you were unable to attend one of the town hall meetings and have questions or wish to share confidential feedback, feel free to fill out the web form (your information and email is confidential) at: www.penbayhealthcare.org/collaboration.

Ponderosa Playland Receives Let's Go! Redy Award

Ponderosa Playland
(L-R): Adrienne Gallant, Let's Go! Knox County coordinator, Dawn Gauthier, director and owner, Ponderosa Playland, Beth Vanorse, teacher, Ponderosa Playland

Let's Go! Knox County is pleased to announce that Ponderosa Playland is the first Let's Go! site in Knox County to receive the Redy Award, given to community members or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding commitment, leadership and innovation to the Let's Go! 5-2-1-0 program. Ponderosa Playland is a home-based childcare facility located in St. George and is now entering their third year of participation with Let's Go!

Says Dawn Gauthier, Ponderosa Playland's owner and director, "Being a part of Let's Go! has made us more aware that it's not hard to do healthy celebrations or to feed kids healthy food daily". Over the past two years, Ponderosa Playland has gone from celebrating holidays and special occasions with cakes, cupcakes, candy and cookies to filling Easter eggs with stickers and tattoos, making ghosts out of bananas, Christmas trees out of broccoli, pumpkins out of Clementine oranges and witches' brooms from cheese and pretzels. Gauthier reported that the parents are completely on board. Instead of bringing sugary treats for their children's birthdays, they now bring fruit salad, cheese and crackers or other healthy snacks. One parent wanted to bring in homemade banana bread but their child reminded them that it had to be healthy so the parent made it with applesauce instead of oil.

Quarry Hill Employees Honored for Excellence in Caregiving

The Maine Health Care Association (MHCA) honored two Quarry Hill employees as recipients of the organization's 2014 Celebrating Excellence in Caregiving Awards.

Shannon Black and Linda Meservey, CNA, are among 17 award winners statewide. Shannon serves as service representative for Quarry Hill's assisted living and nursing care centers. Assistant administrator Nancy Marcille, RN, called Shannon "a role model for the best of what we all strive to be in long-term care: loving, kind, capable, organized, focused, compassionate, quick-thinking, people-oriented and able to juggle a zillion tasks and still make each person she speaks to feel at ease. Shannon is loved by everyone-residents, families, and coworkers alike."

Linda, a certified nursing assistant with 28 years of experience, provides bedside care for residents of the Gardens, Quarry Hill's nursing care community. "Linda never gives less than 110 percent to her residents and her team," Marcille commented. "She possesses an uncanny ability to know what's important to each person in her care and how to make them feel special and loved."

MHCA is a nonprofit trade association representing Maine's 250 long-term care providers, including nursing homes and assisted living communities.

Quarry Hill and Kno-Wal-Lin Named Best Providers

Quarry Hill was voted Best Retirement Home in Knox County for the eleventh consecutive year in Courier Publications' 2014 Best of Knox County People's Choice poll. The annual poll asks readers to identify their favorite service providers, businesses, stores, restaurants, and more and names the top vote getters in each category. "Quarry Hill is honored to have been elected number one in its category yet again this year. We appreciate the continued support of the Midcoast community and promise to continue working hard to working hard to earn the public's high regard," said Quarry Hill executive director Mary Sargent.

Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice was recently named the best Home Care Provider for Knox County in the People's Choice Best of the Best Awards. The Best of Best award is a testament to the skilled nursing, telehealth, physical, speech and occupational therapy, social work, spiritual care, personal care, chore assistance, and companion services that Kno-Wal-Lin staff have provided for their home care, hospice and palliative care clients.

Tammy Bragg, Radiology, EOM October 2014
(L-R): Erik Frederick, Tammy Bragg and members of the Radiology team congratulate Tammy.

Tammy Bragg: October Employee of the Month

Tammy Bragg, RN, Radiology, was the October Employee of the Month.

Tammy Bragg deserves being the Employee of the Month more than anyone else we know. Her Radiology colleagues write: "Tammy is the only nurse for the whole department and is always on the run, but she always has a smile on her face and an amazing attitude. Our patients look forward to our outgoing, smiling nurse when they come come patient visits. Tammy is a great person and a wonderful coworker to all of us. We are very lucky to have her with us. Not only is Tammy a nurse, she is a professional mom and housewife! Tammy goes beyond her every day duties and helps keep us grounded when things go wrong. She is always helping others even if she doesn't have time. She ALWAYS listens to her patients and coworkers with ALL their concerns. She NEVER complains about anything we throw at her. If it wasn't for Tammy, a lot of things would go unnoticed."

Matt Dingle, October Daisy Award Recipient

Nurses across Pen Bay Healthcare are being honored with the DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Matt Dingle, RN, was honored as the Daisy Award recipient for October.

Matt Dingle, Michelle Burtis
Michelle Burtis presents Daisy Award to Matt Dingle.
Matt Dingle, RN. Matt deserves the Daisy Award for his intuitive understanding of patients' needs, empathy and ability to discuss sensitive personal care matters with dignity and respect. My dad was a patient at Pen Bay Healthcare. He stayed in room xx after his right foot was amputated. Matt cared for my dad during his entire stay. He understood my dad's needs which varied greatly from extensive care immediately after the surgery to functioning at a higher level days after the surgery. He presented each task with enthusiasm, energy and dedication. Matt understood that patients have worries about transferring to a rehab facility. He expressed concern for my family's well being and the stress a significant surgery places on the immediate family members. I was very impressed with his ability to discuss using the bathroom while preserving the patient's dignity and respect. My family felt comforted during my dad's stay at the hospital and that feeling was due in large part to his attentive care.

The PBMC Daisy Award nominees for October included: Peggy Flanagan, RN, Danielle York, RN, Lindsay Gutek, RN, Kathy Phillips, RN and Kellie Coates, RN, from Med/Surg and Nola Metcalf, RN, Karen Stickney, RN and Martha Sue Fleming, RN from Ob/Gyn.

About The Daisy Foundation

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Cauchy, The Therapy Dog Turned 11 on 11/11

Cauch, Dr. Merrill's Therapy Dog
(L-R): Cauchy waits to greet patients, a patient enjoys Cauchy's company.
Cauchy, Robert Merrill, MD's Welsh Corgi is certified by Therapy Dogs International and turned 11 years old this past Veterans' Day on November 11.

Cauchy, who has received AKC Basic and Canine Good Citizen training, has been has been coming to Dr. Merrill's office since he was one year old. Staff all look after him.  Cauchy often greets patients in the waiting room and goes to the exam room with one or another, then back again. Patients have often said, "He loves me!" Dr. Merrill has heard that one patient even transferred to his office because of Cauchy. It's hard work!

Staff in Dr. Merrill's office are very careful around the elderly and children but Cauchy is very gentle and good natured. He never barks, except at the end of the day when he sees Dr. Merrill remove his stethoscope. He then goes wild, ready to go home. In the mornings, he practically leaps into the car to head for work and is very disappointed on Fridays when the office is closed.

Smokeout 2014

(L-R): Carla-Jo Kaler, tobacco treatment specialist and Eileen Murray, licensed acupuncturist.

Great American Pen Bay Smokeout Success

Over a hundred folks visited us--doctors, nurses, smokers. non-smokers, as well as outpatients and community members--to learn about smoking cessation during our Great American Pen Bay Smokeout event on Thursday, November 20. Ten people took the pledge to lead a tobacco-free life and encouraged others to do the same.

Smokeout 2014
Licensed acupuncturist Eileen Murray performed mini-acupuncture treatments on 29 individuals. Many liked the calming stress-reduction effect. Visitors were able to pick up some pocket scripting and helpful hints and staff learned that all smokers are welcome to go to the Pharmacy and receive a packet and a free NRT to help reduce their cravings.

One person wanted to know how this event would benefit them. Carla-Jo Kalter kindly explained, "a smoke-free environment is everyone's job."

For stopping by and entering our raffle, Barbara Hilt won a free Butterball Hormone free frozen turkey and April Totman won a Rosemary, Thyme and Sage pot of fresh herbs.

November is National Home Care & Hospice Month

KWL Health Fair 2014
Our recent KWL Health Fair table.
In observance of National Home Care & Hospice Month, Kno-Wal-Lin would like to take this opportunity to thank all of its staff, volunteers, and auxiliary members who work so tirelessly to serve our communities in Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties. Our staff and volunteers have given countless (often unrecognized) hours offering community education programs, participating in health fairs, community health and wellness initiatives and a myriad of activities to promote and support KWL's services and the health of the communities we serve. Last, but certainly not least, there are the many "behind the scenes" KWL staff members who keep operations running smoothly and create the supportive foundation that makes all the above-mentioned work possible.

Thank you again KWL staff, volunteers and auxiliary members for all you do!

FOUNDATION NEWS

Better Together Capital Campaign Wraps Up

Over the last four years, Pen Bay Healthcare has been engaged in a highly successful fundraising campaign. The Better Together campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort we have ever undertaken, has focused on three main initiatives:
  • caring for women and families
  • providing high quality, compassionate patient and family centered care
  • providing optimal, compassionate care to hospice patients and their families in a state-of-the-art facility.
To date, members of our community have contributed more than $14 million to the campaign. Physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers stepped up early to contribute together with other generous donors. Their tremendous outpouring of support funded renovations to the Birth Center, patient rooms and Outpatient Reception and Registration. Campaign gifts helped purchase new equipment such as the Sim Baby Infant Simulator and fetal monitors. Early donations supported nursing and clinical staff scholarships and funded new educational and outreach programs and programs in Clinical Excellence.
Sussman House - 2up The campaign is also helping to support the construction and opening of the Sussman House. Our fundraising goal for this project is $6.6 million and we are over 90% of the way there. The Sussman House, the first building at Pen Bay Healthcare to be funded entirely with privately donated gifts and grants, is a terrific example of how we are truly better together. Generous donors, grateful patients, compassionate caregivers and others, inspired by their experiences with Pen Bay Healthcare, have contributed $6.1 million, leaving just $500,000 to reach our goal.

As we approach the final stages of the campaign we are reaching out to everyone to help push us over the top. We hope to finish the campaign by December 31, 2014 and we would love to be able to count you among our donors.

For those who have not participated, letters have been mailed to your home.  Enclosed with each letter is a returnable form where you may make a gift to the campaign via payroll deduction, PTO donation, or as a one-time gift by credit card, check, or stock transfer. All gifts made to the Better Together Campaign are tax-deductible. PTO hours make a wonderful gift, donate them before December 19 to earn a 2014 tax credit.

In this season of giving, please help us reach our goal--every gift large or small makes an impact.

Thank you!
