How is This Still a Thing?
|
While British squash fans were rubbing themselves raw over this latest installment of the Commonwealth Games, pop culture had its say.
Britain's John Oliver off The Daily Show gave his unique take. Unfortunately for squash, what happened at 1:39 is the promo for our sport. To see the video, please click here. TRUTH & Rumors
|
-
Squash Ezine didn't go to print in July. And its Publishers have been very secretive about why. - Rumors abound that a stand-off with the Truth & Rumors Editor were involved.
- We hear Amherst College head squash coach Peter Robson has smartly chosen Fabian Kalaitzis, the Greek God of Squash, as his new top assistant.
- Kalaitzis has won more Greek National Championships than anyone in history.
- If Amherst is right, Kalaitzis will have the same positive impact on the teams' culture that Gilly Lane is having at Penn.
- Americans are noting that President Obama is now vacationing on Martha's Vineyard, the affluent summer colony located off the coast of Massachusetts.
- Squash circles tell us that Brown University's head squash coach Stuart LeGassick and U Penn's head coach Jack Wyant were also "on island" this past month for some well-earned R & R.
- Speaking of Martha's Vineyard, PST's Joe McManus will be there soon. McManus evidently edited the book Beneath the College Jersey, written by Marten Vandervelde. According to the book's Facebook page, the Bromance Duo will be speaking in Edgartown as part of a promo tour.
- Vandervelde was seen (coincidentally?) palling around with PST elite at this past May's PST World Championship tournament at the Detroit Athletic Club.
- Squash icon David Palmer had never won a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games - until this year.
- This past week, he reached the finals in the mixed doubles and won Gold with Rachael Grinham.
- He took a shower to freshen up.
- Then he came back minutes later to the same court and won another Gold Medal with Cameron Pilley.
- Palmer shockingly took some stick from fellow Aussies for participating in the Games. But his two golds quieted them down rather quickly it seems.
- The recent Newport Steamer was a typical Who's Who. With an Open Bar next to 8 squash courts, many happy fans enjoyed summer squash action in Newport, Rhode Island. Among those in attendance:
- Bates College Coach Pat Cosquer
- St. Paul's new coach Chris Smith
- Harvard Club Squash King Richard Chin
- Tufts U. Coach Joe McManus
- Stanford U. Coach Mark Talbott
- Rhode Island US Senate Republican Nominee Barry Hinckley
- Coach Paul Assaiante was reportedly beaming at the recent 1st ever US Junior regional training squad event. We hear Richard Wade and his team at US Squash did a bang up job organizing the event.
- 20 years ago, Assaiante and Trinity College were the Barbarians at the Gate threatening squash's hierarchy.
- Today, Assaiante is The Establishment protecting his kingdom.
