"thoroughly nice chaps" - we are

http://www.squashezine.com Time was when all of England hated the Squash Ezine.

This week, the world's hottest squash related website, gave us a big shout out from across the pond.

PSA Cancels World Series

psa The UK-based PSA has cancelled its World Series, the capstone event at which the tour's top 8 compete for year end honors.

The story was uncovered (yet again) by SquashMad.com.

WSA Cancels World Series

WSA The WSA World Series, also known as the event that piggy back's on the PSA World Series, has been cancelled.

We figured we would report it as a separate event since they are, at least for the moment, a separate tour.

Pearson and Matthew's Special Relationship

Credit Where It Is Due

Richard Millman salutes David Pearson.

However, before he does so, he slags off England Squash writing, "The failure of England Squash and Racketball to learn how to develop our sport as a business, in my opinion, is a fact and a consummate disaster."

Squash Mad Reports Squash's Olympic Dream Alive

England's SquashMad.com reported this morning here that squash's Olympic dream could still be alive.

We would like to remind our British friends of Lucy and Charlie.

She (IOC) routinely promises Charlie (World Squash) that he has a shot at kicking the ball (getting into the Olympics). And at the last minute (IOC vote), Charlie realizes he's been tricked. #Don'tBeACharlie

Dad Tells Son Hit Opponent with Racquet

In a boys U-13 match, a father told his son to hit his opponent with his racquet, and the boy did so.

Last Week's Question

Last week we asked "Should all teams that have even one boy/man playing on their squad be considered a men's team?"

Very, very few people were interested in this question.

But 2/3 of those that answered said
yes, even one man on a team makes it a man's team.

To Claim or Not to Claim a National Championship

Bates and Bowdoin have each finished 9th in the nation at the women's college squash championships. In fact, they have each done so on three different occasions.

Only one claimed it was a national championship.

College Notes

- Lots of upsets this week as College Squash is getting very interesting.

- Pay attention to the fast rising Drexel men. John White's team was a 12-10 game five loss away from upsetting #8 ranked Cornell.

- #19 Drexel's women upset #13 Williams women as well this week.

- #7 Franklin and Marshall's men upended #3 Princeton with a crushing 7-2 victory. F&M hadn't beaten Princeton in its previous 24 attempts.

- Scandal surrounded the #6 St. Lawrence men's victory over #5 Rochester. But in the end St. Lawrence walked away with the victory they needed.

- Jamie King's #20 Hamilton women knocked off #12 Middlebury.

- Mark Allen is wasting no time getting the U. Virginia program moving as his teams are also quickly improving.

- And young and energetic coach Luke Forster is having a nice impact on Northeastern University.

Dipika's Funky Court

This video appears to be promoting a website that doesn't exist. But it features Dipika Pallikal and Sarah Fitz-Gerald. So, we watched it.

TRUTH & Rumors

  • ShhJust a week after a tragic report of a talented, 23 year old, Canadian male, squash player being hit by a car while cycling, this week we learned of a 22 year old female, top 10 ranked Belgian who was hit by a car while cycling on her way to work. Terribly sad.
  • Victor Elmaleh turns 95 today.  Born in 1918, his parents named him Victor because he was born 15 days after the Armistice.
    • Victor, at 49, was the oldest player to win an American doubles national title.
  • 16 year old Sabrina Sobhy won her first WSA tournament this past week. It was also at 16 that her now famous sister, Amanda, starting winning pro events.
  • Egyptian squash promoter Ashraf Hanafi this week said squash in Egypt is like football in Brazil. Hard to argue with him.
  • American translation to the above: Egyptian squash promoter Ashraf Hanafi this week said, squash in Egypt is like soccer in Brazil. Hard to argue with him.
  • SquashMad has unearthed an atrocious forehand squash grip on a young woman. But those super-focused squash guys were so focused on the grip they called her a man in their innuendo laced write-up.
  • In College Squash teams are meant to play their best player at #1 and the second best player at #2 and so on.
    • But the stacking of ladders by some, where coaches move players to the spot where they believe they have the best chance of winning, has become so obvious that coaches and players are wondering if there is any way to police the problem.
  • Rumor has it Trinity College has some January admits coming in who will make an impact on Trinity's chances to win more national championships. #Malaysia #Egypt
    • ... and by national championships we mean being #1 in the nation.
  • PSA's World Series has been cancelled 7 weeks before the event was due to start. Because of the tour's recent gag order, no players have criticized the tour's leadership.
    • However, a couple squash fans took to Twitter here to poke PSA's leader.
