| This past week the NY Times wrote a piece which was largely supportive of squash's Olympic campaign.
Even in a piece such as this, they still felt obliged to write, "many Olympic watchers see wrestling as the heavy favorite," and "Squash . . . is now considered a long shot."

Sports Illustrated:
Squash an Outsider in Olympic Bid
| In the two-year contest for a single spot in the 2020 Olympics, squash long seemed to be the front-runner. Then, in February, everything changed.
Wrestling appears to have the influential support of Russian President Vladimir Putin for a campaign that has brought the United States and Iran into a common cause.

PSA Exec Swipes at WSA |
Laurent Cossa, a member of PSA's management team, took a shot at the WSA on Twitter this week. The women's tour sent out a tweet here promoting their relatively high purse at their Malaysian Open, compared to PSA's. To be fair, the women don't make nearly the money the men do (and the men don't make much). So, for the one time they might make more, you can't blame them for taking a moment to celebrate. But that didn't sit well with the short tempered and dim-witted Mr. Cossa. To see the Tweet and the reply, please click here. End note: According to SquashSite's draw here, the purses actually are exactly the same. - - -
P.S. Don't send us hate mail about the photo above. We know he looks like a guy who's about to rob a convenience store. But that's Mr. Cossa's preferred photo.

Romance on Squash Court ?
|
Last week we asked you if you had ever been romantic on a squash court. The music video below features a couple on a court. But cultural differences prevent us from knowing exactly how this relationship will progress. And yes, at first we initially thought the video featured a naked Trinity alum, Andres Vargas. Well, we're pretty sure it's not him. To see the video, please click here.

Eating After 8:00 p.m.?
|
We have all heard the warning of never eating after 8 p.m. or you'll gain weight. But this may not actually be the case - your metabolism doesn't actually shut down at night. (Your metabolism doesn't even know how to tell time.) So really, the key to weight loss mostly just comes down to the basics of calories-in versus calories-out. TRUTH & Rumors
|
Blair Academy (Blairstown, New Jersey) squash coach Jim Moore may be the most active prep school coach working the phones to get his boys into the nation's top college programs. - If you pay attention to the results of the WSA, PSA, PST and junior tournament players who have gone to Florida to train at the David Palmer Squash Academy, you would quickly recognize that Palmer should now be regarded as one of the world's great coaches.
- St. Lawrence University coach Chris Abplanalp deserves more credit for his coaching ability.
- This spring he saw his talented freshman Amr Khaled Khalifa down 0-2 and struggling against Harvard's Ali Faraq in the semi-finals of the national championship tournament.
- Khalifa went on to beat Faraq 3-2 in one of the great changes of momentum in college squash history.
- Abplanalp's ability to "stop the bleeding" and get his player mentally turned around is a rare and precious skill. And it won a National Championship.
- Speaking of great coaches. Scotland's national coach Roger Flynn is doing great work. Their 9th place finish at the world teams looks ok, but when you look at how hard done they were by the seeding it was an epic achievement.
- The Wilkins brothers from Wales are building quite a fan base in America. Rob is coaching in Stamford, CT and Phil is in Tuxedo Park, NY. They talk fast. So pay attention because they certainly know the game.
- Squash Player Magazine, based in London, took a hard shot at the French in their current edition - accusing the French of trying to stack the deck at the Men's World Team Championships. Ahh, the wars between England and France continue to delight.
- With so many "retired" players playing pro leagues, winning national championships, and representing their countries in international competition, the definition of a retired player is now more difficult to quantify.
- We still believe London-based Squash Player Magazine is a great publication, but since its global distribution is struggling at 6,000 or so (far less than Squash Ezine - forgive the self promotion), one can wonder how long it will survive in a digital age.
- College Athletic Directors love to do well in the annual Director's Cup (mentioned above). Unfortunately for squash coaches, since squash is not yet an NCAA sport, squash results don't count toward the Cup results. So, you can imagine how that impacts AD's attention to our sport.
- Amr Shabana, the best chain-smoking squash player in history, has signed a new three year racquet deal with "Eye" racquets.
- Never heard of 'em?
- Neither had we.
- In 5 minutes, you'll have forgotten them.
- By next year, you'll have forgotten Shabana.
- Peter Nicol has moved to New York City. #Yawn
- Is there any former World #1 who isn't trying to move to the United States?
