10,000 Hours on Court?
|
David Epstein's new book "The Sports Gene: What Makes the Perfect Athlete" challenges the concept of 10,000 hours to expertise in a subject area. The 10,000 hour rule now dictates the way many athletes are trained. But Psychologist K Anders Ericsson, who is viewed as the father of the 10,000 hours to expertise concept, indicates Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers," misconstrued Ericsson's conclusions. Last Week's Question
|
PSA topped last week's survey of Squash Ezine readers as the world's best squash brand.
PST was a distant second and no other tour / league broke single digits.
A couple fans wrote in 'NY Squash' and 'OSDL (Ontario Squash Doubles League),' which were not initially included on our list.

Question of the Week
|
In the video at left, Egypt's Yathreb Adel gets a ball in the center of the court.
Instead of hitting to the front wall, she aims for the side wall and sets up to play a boast into the center of her opponent's body and does so.
She is an elite player (reached the finals of two WSA tournaments this month).
Is it a dirty shot that deserves to be penalized with a conduct point? Or is it part of the game, and the referee made the right call with a let.

TRUTH & Rumors
|
Congratulations to recent George Washington University squash player Omar Sobhy, who is now a teaching pro at the Metropolitan Club.- New Zealand's Timaru Squash Club has awarded Linda Kenny a life membership in recognition of her 20 years of service to the sport.
- Many rudiments of playing squash are universally accepted.
- However, the world's top coaches have a disagreement on the importance of the wrist cock for a player's racquet preparation.
- Many top players now have a slight wrist cock or none at all (here is one example). Former England Nat'l Coach David Pearson is acknowledged as the father of this style.
- Whereas, most other top players emphasize a more conventionally cocked wrist (here is one example). Harvard Coach Mike Way is the most prolific coach in this school of thought.
- And Ramy Ashour's thumb moving up the racquet, instead of around it, could also challenge some long held squash beliefs.
- Middlebury College squash coach and renaissance man, John Illig is an author of three books. Click here to see them on Amazon.
- At the same time, squash federations are aggressively squeezing members for $$$ to support the Olympic Bid, they are quietly acknowledging that the September 8 IOC vote is not going to go squash's way.
- With daily coverage, results, analysis and feature stories from the world of squash, Daily Squash Report is a gift to us all. Please give 'em a click - often.
- 11 years after founding Squash and Beyond, squash's King of Camps, Zafi Levy, has built his program into the largest summer squash camp program in the U.S.
- But it is Levy's weekly soccer game that results in the most colorful stories shared among insiders.
