Celebrating Service during National Volunteer Week

On April 6, 2014, Governor Martin O'Malley issued a proclamation announcing April 6-12 as National Volunteer Week, a week dedicated to recognizing, celebrating, and thanking all those serve their communities.   


Here at the GOSV, we're offering ways to help your organization celebrate the service of your volunteers. We invite you to explore this edition of Service in Action to find out about the GOSV's resources and to learn how you can submit a nomination for this year's Governor's Service Awards!   

 GOSV Recognition Tools and Events
 
Did you know our office works with a number of partners to provide opportunities for nonprofits, faith-based organizations, businesses, and schools to honor the contributions of local volunteers? 
 
From state-wide events, like the Governor's Service Awards and the Honor Rows program,  to volunteer certificates awarded to individual citizens, there are many ways to recognize the extraordinary work of volunteers across Maryland.

The 31st Annual Governor's Service Awards
 
For 30 years, the GOSV has presented the Governor's Service Awards. This year, the ceremony will recognize volunteer service during 2013 (or longer for a lifetime achievement award). 

For the 31st annual awards, the GOSV is announcing new award categories. To find out about these new categories, and review the official rules, visit the Governor's Service Awards page.

Nominations for the awards must be submitted via an online form by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2014.

Did you know that you can submit your own story to the GOSV Stories of Service page? Send your story to julie.mendez@maryland.gov and you may find it on our Stories of Service page or in our next newsletter! 

 

 

There are a number of inspiring stories from AmeriCorps programs and Maryland Volunteer Centers waiting for you at the GOSV's Stories of Service page!

 

One of our newest additions includes a story from Monica Moore, an AmeriCorps member from Reading Partners Maryland, who shares a story about one of the amazing volunteers she works with. Our other addition is a reflection piece from Alanna, a Community Art Collaborative AmeriCorps member, who serves at Arts Everyday, an organization dedicated to ensuring Baltimore City students have access to the arts
