Recognizing service and volunteerism throughout Maryland
Nominate Extraordinary Volunteers for the Governor's Service Awards!
For nearly 30 years, the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GOSV) has presented the Governor's Service Awards. These awards recognize Maryland citizens for their significant contributions to the life and health of the State and its people during a particular period of time. This year, the ceremony will recognize volunteer service during 2012 (or longer for a lifetime achievement award). The awards will be presented to selected recipients and invitees at an event in the fall.
The 2013 awards ceremony marks the 30th anniversary of the Maryland Governor's Service Awards. The GOSV is honored to continue the tradition of recognizing outstanding citizens who serve to strengthen their communities.

Story of Service: "Inspiring Students to Serve" from AIM for Excellence AmeriCorps, AVID Program
Service is contagious. That is what Benjamin, an AVID AmeriCorps member, has learned this year. He is serving at Patapsco High School in Baltimore County. And when he first walked into the AVID classroom, he couldn't be sure if the students even wanted to be there. After all, the AVID program targets average students. They are the kids that everyone tends to overlook. They aren't the "smart" kids at the top of the class. But they are also not failing. For all Benjamin knew, the students he was going to tutor had every intention of coasting by. Learn more about Benjamin's AVID students on our Stories of Service page.

AIM for Excellence, an AmeriCorps State program sponsored by Civic Works, serves Baltimore communities. AIM for Excellence AmeriCorps members tutor and mentor students, grow food for low-income communities, and provide environmental and nutrition education. To find out more about this program, and all the Maryland AmeriCorps State programs, visit the GOSV's Our Grantees page.
