Greetings and Happy Holidays from the GOSV!

Looking for a way to spread some holiday cheer? The Maryland volunteer centers have wonderful resources to help you find the best service activities for you and your family. BVU's Volunteer Central, the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County, and the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County are just a few of the centers that have great holiday guides on their websites. Not sure where your local volunteer center is located? Check out the GOSV's new Volunteering in Maryland interactive map to find out.

If your holiday season is getting busier by the minute, consider volunteering after the holidays are over. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on January 21, 2013, and is a national day of service. Many volunteer centers will be hosting service activities throughout the long weekend, including Montgomery County Volunteer Center. So save the date and find out more about how you can celebrate through volunteering!

Apply to Host an AmeriCorps Member in Maryland

With passion, commitment, and hard work, AmeriCorps VISTA members create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. If your organization works to eradicate poverty, and would benefit from a full-time one year VISTA member, then the Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) has a great opportunity for you!

GHCC is currently seeking applications from organizations interested in hosting a full-time VISTA  member as part of their 2013 - 2014 AmeriCorps VISTA Project! Organizations wishing to participate in this project must first apply by submitting a concept paper and project plan. Applications are due Monday, January 28, 2013 before 9:00 AM.

To find out more about this opportunity, and to apply to host your own VISTA member, visit GHCC's AmeriCorps VISTA page.
SERVICE IN ACTION: Lessons Through Service

Catherine Thomas, a 2011-2012 AmeriCorps member, shares her story about how AmeriCorps helped her develop a passion for service and affected her professional future.

AmeriCorps has been extremely instrumental in decisions I have made that will affect the rest of my life. This past year I was a first year AmeriCorps tutor in the AVID program. I served a 675 hour term of service at Franklin High School while trying to decide if I wanted to pursue teaching or not. Working with the students, and knowing the affect that I had on their growth and development was monumental to my own personal and professional growth. It inspired me that I could inspire students to want to achieve.

A New Year Brings Changes to the GOSV News

In 2013, the GOSV will be delivering information in a new way. Instead of one newsletter broadcasting all updates bi-monthly, we will be dividing our news into two segments: GOSV Service in Action and GOSV Funding Opportunities.

GOSV Service in Action will keep you updated on AmeriCorps in Maryland, volunteer recognition events, and all other streams of service throughout the State. The GOSV Service in Action eNewsletter will be released quarterly.

GOSV Funding Opportunities will provide you with the latest information about Maryland AmeriCorps State funding, and provides tips and tricks on how to write a great grant application. This eNews will be released twice a year, during the start of our two grant cycles.

We look forward to providing you with the latest on service and AmeriCorps funding in Maryland!

As a current subscriber to GOSV News, you will automatically begin receiving both the GOSV Service in Action and the GOSV Funding Opportunities. If you would like to unsubscribe from one or both lists, please click on the "Update Profile/Email Address" at the bottom of this email.
