DECEMBER 2014
A Balanced Perspective
The Leader Within
by John Wright, CPA
Many of us have either attended leadership development programs or sent current or emerging leaders within our team to the same types of programs. The programs all have some benefit to the individual, but the difficulty is translating new individual leadership behaviors effectively into the organization.

2014 Year-End Tax Planning
by Landon Ross, CPA
For the past couple of years, year-end tax planning has been difficult due to the uncertainty of many tax incentives. Year-end tax planning for 2014 will not be any different. While the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 permanently extended the "Bush-era" tax cuts, other tax incentives were only extended through the 2013 calendar year.

After years of rework, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released final regulations governing taxpayers' ability to capitalize or deduct costs associated with acquiring, producing, or improving tangible assets. The regulations are effective for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2014.
Going, Going, Gone - When  Employees Disappear During FMLA
by Connie Collins, SPHR, PI
The vast majority of employees are only away from the workplace or use various leave benefits for legitimate reasons. A Season Of Giving at PS&Co.

The spirit of giving has been in full force at PS&Co. this year, especially during the holiday season. Although the firm partners with many remarkable and deserving nonprofits throughout the year, it has a special partnership of giving with two local charities - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas (BBBS) in Austin and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Through the generosity of San Antonio team members and the firm, the United Way received more than $130,000 in contributions from PS&Co. Money was raised from events throughout the year, such as jeans days, a golf tournament, Fiesta medal sale, wine tasting, Kiss the Pig contest, and an annual employee pledge campaign.

This Fall, the Austin team kicked off two months of holiday cheer to support BBBS, including a holiday toy drive, cocktail competition, candy grams, a Sumo wrestling competition between two firm partners, and the annual employee pledge campaign - culminating in a holiday party for Littles and a $24,000 donation to BBBS.
