Thanks to everyone for giving me such a warm welcome. I'm excited to be part of the Otterbein community working together to achieve the university's mission.
This has been a transition year for the CTL, as we build on the best of the past while expanding into exciting new areas. As always, CTL offers events, resources, and consultation services to support teaching and learning at Otterbein.
For our events this fall, we have continued the CTL tradition of professional learning communities (PLCs) and book discussion groups, while adding some new programs, such as the NITLE webinar series and the Blended Learning Course Transformation Mini-Grants and Institute (see below for more on all of these programs).
In order to provide you with resources on teaching, we continue to maintain the faculty development collection on the third floor of the library but are also offering some new ways to discover resources through our social networking projects (see below).
And finally, we remain available for individual consultation. Please call or email CTL if you want to talk with someone about teaching, designing a course, improving student learning, collecting and analyzing feedback, exploring instructional technologies, or other related topics. We're here to listen and to help.
I look forward to working with you.

Connect with CTL, anytime, anywhere
CTL events (like those listed on the sidebar of our newsletter) are a great way to get together with others to talk about teaching and learning, and we really value this face-to-face interaction. But we also know that your schedules don't always allow you to attend and that your interest in teaching and learning isn't restricted to the times we have set for events. You can now follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and/or Diigo to get regular updates, news, and links to resources.

Blended Learning Course Transformation Mini Grants and Institute
Academic Affairs and the CTL are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the combined Blended Learning Course Transformation Mini-Grant Program and Course Transformation Institute. These programs are designed to support the development of courses that make extensive use of blended learning course design. There will be two rounds of these Grants and Institute; 1) during January term 2013 and 2) after Commencement, 2013. The present call is JUST for the first round of grants/Institute in January of 2013. Grant recipients must expect to offer the blended course during the coming academic year. - more details and mini grant application

Otterbein Collegiate Institute
Dr. Scott Ebbrecht, Liaison for K-12 Partnerships
As a principal working in the elementary and secondary divisions, as well as simultaneously serving as a faculty member in higher education, I was bewildered at how many teachers/professors would share with me a common belief that the previous grade level/course instructor should have done more to prepare students for what was next, in both school and life. -read more

New Faculty PLC and Mentoring
Dr. Andrew Mills, CTL Faculty Associate, Religion and Philosophy
As the CTL's Faculty Associate for the 2012-13 year, I have been focusing on new faculty programming and orientation. There is a fantastic group of twelve new faculty at Otterbein this year, and it has been a pleasure to spend the Fall semester working with them. They bring a wide range of experience and disciplinary expertise to campus, and they are all dedicated teachers who are highly committed to seeing that their students succeed both in and outside of their classrooms.

iPad Professional Learning Community
Tom Wilcox, and Kathryn Plank, CTL facilitators
At the beginning of the 2012 - 2013 academic year, nine faculty participants joined a professional learning community in order to explore together how iPads might be used in their classrooms. Their year-long exploration will be the continuation of a two-year pilot, launched last year by a cohort of their peers during the 2011 - 2012 academic year. Current participants are experimenting with new pedagogical strategies and methods made possible by mobile computing devices, such as iPads. -read more -iPad PLC member list |
Book Discussion Groups
This fall, CTL sponsored book discussion groups for two different books. One group read Understanding and Supporting Adult Learners: A Guide for Colleges and Universities, and two different groups read The WAC Casebook: Scenes for Faculty Reflection and Program Development. CTL book discussion groups meet for four scheduled meetings, and are led by volunteer facilitators. Group members receive a free copy of the book and are expected to attend at least three of the meetings. The groups decide on future reading assignments. Do you have a topic or specific title you want considered for a book group? Please send your suggestions to ctl@otterbein.edu -read more, participant list
