A Message from our Head of School

The recitation of Modei Ani, and the affirmation of "We are worthwhile people because we are created b'tzelem Elokeim...," is a long-standing tradition at the TDSA morning line-up. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have enjoyed this tradition for close to twenty years.  However, I decided to add my own personal touch to the tradition. Every Friday morning, I tell a story related to the parsha hashavua. These stories provide inspiration and I strive to bring the message of the parsha to their young level. Please ask your child about today's story. (HINT: Ask them about the family who had an unexpected guest.)

Have a wonderful and restful Shabbos. My family and I are joining the eighth grade boys' Shabbaton at the Ocoee Retreat Centernear Chattanooga, along with several other faculty members. I am looking forward to spending Shabbos with these boys, as they are the "final result" of many years at TDSA. I know that with them, and their rebbes, Shabbos will be a special one for me.

Good Shabbos.

Rabbi Joshua Einzig

Divrei Torah from our Eighth Graders

Parshas Mishpatim

By Rina Levitt

In this week's parsha we learn about the עבד עברי (Jewish slave). After six years of being a slave, he gets to go free, but, if he wants to remain a slave, then he gets a piercing in his right ear.

רש"י asks a question: Of all the organs in the body, why the ear? רש"י gives two answers. The first is that the slave heard at Har Sinai not to steal. The second is that he heard at Har Sinai only to be a servant to Hashem.

A limud we can learn from this is that there are always consequences for our actions. We have to keep that in mind whenever we are faced with difficult decisions, and the piercing of the slave's ear reminds us of this.

From the Desk of Mrs. Linda Rabinowitz,
General Studies Principal

Bricks 4 Kidz® came to TDSA last week for an in-school Lego field trip. The instructors used Legos to deliver hands-on lessons correlated to cross-disciplinary curriculum objectives. The activities were imaginative, engaging, and multi-sensory. "Model building provides opportunities for problem-solving and helps kids develop an appreciation for how things work. All this takes place while kids are having fun and socializing in a non-competitive atmosphere." The students were truly immersed in a 21st Century STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning experience.

Program Goals:

  • Introduce engineering and architecture principles
  • Explore math and science concepts
  • Increase general knowledge through discussions related to each model
  • Develop social/emotional skills such as patience, teamwork and communication in the process of completing a project
  • Enhance self-esteem by solving problems and completing projects
  • Improve fine-motor skills as children manipulate small components
  • Utilize multiple learning modalities to engage visual, kinesthetic and auditory learning styles
  • Teach important classroom skills such as organization and following directions
  • Foster an appreciation for how things work

All students in grades K-6 participated in the field trip. Projects included Pyramids (K) Windmills (Grade 1) Butterflies (Grade 2) Tsunami (Grade 3) Crane (Grade 4) Horse and Buggy (Grade 5) and Mars Rover (Grade 6). The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the instructors were most complimentary of the exemplary behavior and manners of our students.

Counseling Corner by Dr. Sarah Levy

A social and emotional learning (SEL) program can empower students to solve their own conflicts. One invaluable tool for conflict resolution is how to communicate assertively. Students can learn the difference between passive, assertive and aggressive communication styles. Students recognize that being passive(not standing up for themselves) can avoid conflict, but, since passive people do not express themselves, they usually end up feeling stuck and frustrated. Also, a person who is used to being passive can suddenly explode and become aggressive (communicating with anger and hurtful words) due to a buildup of negative feelings. The ideal form of communication is usually using an assertive style (standing up for yourself but in a respectful way)-- right in between passive and aggressive. Teachers and parents can have fun role-playing different scenarios that take place at home or school, and students can act out how they would respond using each one of these approaches. Students often find it hardest to communicate assertively because they fear that they will sound aggressive and hurt someone's feelings. Practicing can give them more confidence. To further develop conflict resolution skills, the counseling department is working with individual classes to strengthen positive leadership skills using the "BRAVE" anti-bullying program. We are grateful to have Mrs. Elana Neustadter, LSW, volunteer to assist me with implementing this program at TDSA.

TDSA Cheers on National School Choice Week with a Five-Day Celebration

The week of January 27th is National School Choice Week, and TDSA is celebrating every day, as shown below. National School Choice is the organization that endorses and lobbies state government to allow programs such as the SSO. Thank you for showing your support!

  • Monday:  Yellow School Choice T-Shirts; raising of yellow flag in front of building
  • Tuesday:  TDSA eighth grade Social Studies students will visit the Georgia State Capitol and participate in the noon National School Choice Rally, accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Rhoda Gleicher.
  • Wednesday:  TDSA will be serving yellow food - bananas for all students, lemonade for faculty, and scrambled eggs for middle school boys' breakfast.
  • Thursday:  Students will write why they love TDSA on yellow ribbons and hang them around the school.
  • Friday:   Popcorn will be served to everyone. The school newsletter will be printed on yellow paper. Yellow gumballs will be distributed to students at dismissal.

Mazel tov  מזל טוב:

  • Mr. Daniel and Mrs. Jessica Blanks and family on the bat mitzvah of their daughter, Chava.
  • Mr. Reuven Michoel and Mrs. Trudy Robbinson the engagement of their son, Chaim Yeshia, to Mira Enkin, daughter of Mr. Marvin and Mrs. Rachelle Enkin, of Toronto.

Please let us know about your simchos; our TDSA family likes to share in your nachas with you! A great way to celebrate your simcha is by sponsoring a TDSA Day of Learning for $180 to sponsor a full day or $90 for half a day (must be shared with another person). You can also do a Group Day of Learning if you have a number of friends who want to sponsor with you. Please contact Sara Abrams in the Business Office, 404-982-0800 ext. 104, or sabrams@torahday.org.

Updates

An update from the Ashburn family, formerly in Atlanta, now in Israel:

"Yonatan Simcha (Yoni) Ashburn wants to say hello to his friends in Atlanta and especially to everyone at TDSA. The Ashburn and Gris families feel gratitude to HKBH and to the many friends in our caring community who send T'filot heavenward on Yoni's behalf." Mrs. Paula Gris

Brachos Bee

Last Friday, third through fifth grade boys' and girls' classes held our annual Bracha Bee. The students were amazing, rattling off the correct brachos to dozens of foods with confidence. In the boys' competition, Hillel Adler (3B) and Shmuel Horowitz (5B) tied for first place, with Yisroel Gross (3B) finishing close behind. In the girls' competition, Kaylie Warga (2G) placed first, with third graders Nechama Bornstein and Rivka Perez taking second and third place respectively. The Bee was coordinated by Rabbi Michoel Alterman and Rabbi Mordechai Cohen.

Spelling Bee

The competition was "intense, i-n-t-e-n-s-e, intense" and the class representatives were completely "focused, f-o-c-u-s-e-d, focused" as the boys' and girls' quarter-final rounds of the Scripps Spelling Bee were held this week. Our genial host, Mr. Lawrence Stroll, put the competitors at ease, enunciating and defining as the rounds progressed, until only one girls' winner and one boys' winner were left standing. Throughout, the audience held up their signs and banners, giving silent hand-wave cheers of encouragement to their classmates. Jemima Schoen was winner in the 1st-3rd grades combined Bee. Fifth grader Zalman Lew won in the 4th -8th grade boys' Bee and eighth grader Maayan Schoen won in the 4th-8th grade girls' Bee. Congratulations to all who participated. Mrs. Lisa Stroll and Mrs. Linda Rabinowitz coordinated this event. The Private School Spell-off, including eleven local schools, will be hosted at TDSA on February 7th.

Ivrit Play

The early childhood classes and third grade girls went to an Ivrit play... and a snowstorm broke out! Culminating their unit of study with Mrs. Vita Resenson, the Ivrit students took turns presenting skits relating to winter weather and the clothing we wear in cold, rain and snow. The entire group reviewed all of the vocabulary they have learned about the names of weather phenomena, such as clouds, thunder, and wind, as well as every item of clothing needed for each weather condition, from umbrellas and hoods to undershirts and galoshes, literally a word for each letter from א to ת. Songs and recitations from each grade accompanied the presentations. Just as Mrs. Resenson was explaining that it doesn't snow in Atlanta, she was surprised by a Hebrew-speaking snowman, who claimed that he had come all the way from New York, where there is plenty of snow. So, he and Mrs. Resenson showered 'snowballs' on the delighted audience. Thank you to Mr. Dimitry Resenson, Mrs. Resenson's son, for the guitar accompaniment and for his guest appearance as the snowman. Congratulations to all of the Ivrit students on their informative presentations and especially to Mrs. Resenson for her creative and outstanding preparations for the program.

First grade girls - Mrs. Donowitz's Limudei Kodesh class

Kitah אyiladot are gearing up for so many new things! We've been very busy preparing for our upcoming siddur play, practicing play parts, singing songs, making decorations, as well as learning about the meanings of various tefillos. We are eagerly anticipating that moment of receiving our new siddurim, IYH. We've also begun our Chumash Milim program this week, as a precursor to learning Chumash! This is a systematic method of learning the Chumash vocabulary prior to opening the Chumash. The girls are off to a great start, BH! We're learning all about the proper brachos we make on food. Upon completion of this unit of learning, we will celebrate with a brachos/amen party in a few weeks, IYH. Last, but not least, our yiladot have just about completed learning the entire Hebrew alphabet in script writing. The girls enjoy writing and take great pride in their written work. Way to go, Kitah Alef yiladot!

Eighth grade boys and girls - Mrs. Gleicher's Social Studies classes

In recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, our oldest students were asked about their dreams for their personal futures. The eighth grade classes were challenged in their social studies class to think about their potential professions, and to create visual representations of these. The students' interests were as varied as they were creative.  Our community is in good hands, judging from the interest shown in engineering, medicine, and the entrepreneurial spirit.  Please visit the main floor middle school hallway to see the full gallery of dreams.

TDSA Sports

The junior varsity boys' basketball team, led by coach Rabbi Michoel Alterman, finished their regular season with 4 wins and 3 losses, capped off by winning our game this week 45-16. We are the #1 seed in a playoff tournament at TDSA this coming Monday. The tournament begins at 4:00 p.m. Our first game in the tournament is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. If we win that game, then we will play in the championship at 7:15p.m. Please bring your enthusiasm and support to cheer for our boys.

TDSA Scout Troop 613

Are you ready for an exciting overnight and hike to Georgia's highest peak? What happens when you don't have enough adult chaperones, but you really, really want to go? As with many situations in life, if you can't do something safely, you need to have the discipline to say no. That's what Troop 613 did this week. Instead of heading north to Brasstown Bald, the boys took a day trip south on Monday to FDR State Park in Pine Mountain. The weather was beautiful, and the hike provided a real workout. Watch for details on the rescheduled trip up north.

Upcoming: Troop Swim on Sunday: leave TDSA circle at 6:30pm, return around 8:30pm.

Troop Rifle Shoot at Bert Adams Scout Reservation in Covington on Sunday, February 2, 11:30am-4pm. $5.

For questions or information on joining the troop, please contact Avraham Warga 404-806-1446, warga.avi@gmail.com.

As part of her bat mitzvah celebration several months ago, Tova Eidex and her family recognized a need at a local organization with which they have a personal connection. The non-profit Dentistry for the Developmentally Disabled Foundation provides dental care that is critical to special needs patients, including Tova's brother, Effie. Since every penny is put toward the dental care, the organization's physical space was described as bare and stark, lacking in color and décor. Tova, along with her seventh grade classmates and many friends, crafted bright and cheerful art work to make the dental clinic a more inviting and comforting environment for the adults and children for whom dental care can be quite distressful. The Eidex family delivered the framed artwork this week and the staff was overjoyed and so grateful. Tova and her class now represent TDSA on the "DDD Foundation" Facebook page, a beautiful Kiddush Hashem!

Friends of TDSA 2014 Update

Our "Friendship" Circle is expanding by the minute. We are humbled by the out pour of generosity and support of our school. TDSA parents, grandparents, faculty, board of trustees, community members, and friends of TDSA have stepped up to the challenge once again, showing that Torah Day School of Atlanta is important and vital to our Jewish community. Without all of your support, we would not be able to do what we do best. We are only three months into our campaign and we are only $150,000 from reaching our goal. Please keep those pledges coming. No pledge is too small! Thank you to all the "Friends" who already made a pledge to our 2013/14 Friends of TDSA Annual Fund! Every contribution makes a difference! Total to date: $352,000!
