Divrei Torah from our Eighth Graders

Parshas Yisro

By Moshe Alterman

The highlight of this week's parsha is the Ten Commandments. The Midrash teaches that all the pleasure we get in this world is a reward for our fulfilling the first of the Ten Commandments, to have faith in Hashem. The ספר חנוּכת התוֹרה wonders: What is special about the mitzvah of faith in Hashem that it should be the source of our reward in this world?

The חנוּכת התוֹרה answers this first question based on a second question. The rabbis teach us that we don't get reward for our mitzvos in this world; rather, we are rewarded in the world to come. This is difficult to understand based on the principle that we are not permitted to delay payment to workers. When Hashem delays our reward until the next world, it would seem that He is transgressing this principle! The חנוּכת התוֹרה answers that the law to pay a worker immediately only applies when the employer hired the employee directly. However, if he was hired through an agent, the law does not apply. We know that the Torah was given to us through an agent, Moshe Rabbeinu. We were not hired directly by Hashem to do the mitzvos. As a result, Hashem is not obligated to pay us immediately.

This line of reasoning makes sense for mitzvos given to us through Moshe Rabbeinu. However, we heard the first two of the Ten Commandments directly from Hashem. That is why He is obligated to pay us in this world for our faith in Him. Therefore, our faith is the source of our reward in this world.

וְאֵתשְׁנֵיבָנֶיהָאֲשֶׁרשֵׁםהָאֶחָדגֵּרְשֹׁםכִּיאָמַרגֵּרהָיִיתִיבְּאֶרֶץנָכְרִיָּהוְשֵׁםהָאֶחָדאֱלִיעֶזֶרכִּי־אֱלֹהֵיאָבִיבְּעֶזְרִיוַיַּצִּלֵנִימֵחֶרֶבפַּרְעֹה: (י"ח: ג-ד) "And her two sons of whom the name of one was Gershom for he had said I was a sojourner in a strange land; And the name of the other was Eliezer for the G-D of my fathe  r came to my aid and he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh."

Moshe named his first son Gershom and his second son Eliezer. The Chofetz Chaim asks the following question: "Why did Moshe have to name his first son Gershom and not his second son?" The reason is because Moshe wanted to remind himself not to be influenced by his father-in-law, Yisro, who did not yet believe in Hashem properly. The name Gershom- a stranger there- reminds Moshe that he is like a stranger in this world because he is here temporarily in order to learn Torah and perform mitzvos. His genuine home is in Heaven with Hashem. And the same is for all Jews. This can be explained with the following mashul:

In order to make money from his merchandise, a businessman traveled far away to a place where the economy was thriving. While he was selling at the state fair, a bothersome man approached the businessman and said, "Why don't you take a break now from selling and watch television or play a game of poker?" The businessman yelled at the bothersome man saying, "What do you think you are doing wasting my time?! I come here from far away for a short amount of time so I could make money to feed my family, and you are telling me to watch television and play a game of poker?! What would I tell my family if I come to them empty handed?"

The nimshal is that we only come to this world for a temporary amount of time to learn Torah and do mitzvos. But then the Yetzer Hara comes and distracts us by telling us to do bad things. We should reply to the Yetzer Hara like the businessman in the mashul so that we can be guaranteed a place by the Kisay Hakavod in our Ultimate Home.

By Binyomin Pearlman

In this week's parsha, the Torah tells us how all of B'nei Yisroel would line up before Moshe in order to ask him their own personal questions. While Yisro was watching this scene unfold he couldn't help asking, "Moshe, how are you able to answer all of these questions by yourself? You're exhausted."

Yisro came up with a solution to his own question. Yisro suggested that Moshe should chose judges from amongst the elders of B'nei Yisroel as helpers to himself. The way the system would work is that any Jew would ask his/her question to a lower judge, and, if the questions were more complicated, then they went to higher and higher judges until they would get to Moshe. This way, Moshe would have a lot more time on his hands and wouldn't be as tired.

Although Yisro's idea was a sensible one, it wasn't perfect. When Moshe accepted this suggestion from Yisro, he was depriving B'nei Yisroel of his own personal influence, teaching, and personality.

This teaches us the importance of attaching oneself to wise and inspirational people, and that, when in a leadership position, we learn it's important to communicate with people who look up to you directly. By doing both of these things, it will help us form and grow in the right way.

Good Shabbos!

TDSA's Geography Bee Winners

For the 26th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the US. On Wednesday, the Torah Day School Championship round was held.  Congratulations to sixth grade student Leeyah Lovett and eighth grader Kalman Warga, who were crowned the 2014 TDSA National Geographic Bee Champions. Each student correctly answered several rounds of incredibly difficult geography questions. Two of the most challenging included "The Donets Basin is an industrial area shared by Russia and which neighboring country to the west?" (Ukraine) and "Mount Kosciuszko, located in the Snowy Mountains, is the highest peak on which continent?" (Australia) Each student will be taking a 100 question test to qualify for the Georgia Geographic Bee, to be held in Milledgeville in the spring. Our thanks go to Mrs. Rhoda Gleicher for coordinating our TDSA competition.

TDSA's Spelling Bee

The school is buzzing with excitement this week as classes have been preparing for TDSA's first annual Spelling Bee. This will also be our first year participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. While our school-wide spelling bee will emphasize the fourth through eighth grade classes, our first through third grade classes will be having a smaller bee of their own as well. Two students from each class will represent their classes at the bee next week. One winner from the boys and one from the girls will represent TDSA at the District Four Spell-Off, which Torah Day School is proudly hosting, on February 7th, 2014. The class representatives, winning first and second place respectively, include:
4G: Sara Deutsch, Tzivia Horowitz; 4B: Noah Kalnitz, Yaakov Yosef Shifrin; 5G: Hindy Litvin, Leah Lipskier; 5B: Shmuel Horowitz, Zalman Lew; 6G: Tamar Stein, Nina Barayeva; 6B: Yehuda Khalili, Eli Golding; 7G: Gitty Lipsyc, Rivky Stein; 7B: Chaim Pollock, Harry Steele; 8G: Maayan Schoen, Racheli Freundlich and 8B: Kalman Warga, Tuvi Warga.

First grade boys and girls - Mrs. Donowitz's and Rabbi Horowitz's Limudei Kodesh classes

This week we held our annual first grade siddur cover parties. So many parents collaborated with their children to make creative and meaningful siddur covers. A special thank you goes to Morah Lew for helping arrange the classroom and for making sure that we had all the materials.

First grade boys-Rabbi Horowitz's Limudei Kodesh class

The first grade boys began learning Chumash parshas Bereishis! After two months of learning the first pasuk of the week's parsha, the boys were ready to begin. They received kriah sheets, translation sheets and worksheets for the entire first perek. It is a pleasure to see the enthusiasm with which the boys are learning. In fact, one day after a Chumash lesson, one boy said, "I would rather learn more Chumash than go to recess"! We are now all eagerly awaiting our siddur play which will be on Tuesday, February 11th in the TDSA gym at 10:00 a.m.

Third grade boys and girls - Mrs. Bolnick's General Studies classes

The third graders are immersed in a unit on adjectives. This week, they demonstrated their comprehension of adjectives and synonyms in a variety of ways. For example, they used adjectives and synonyms to describe things that they see; this involved an apple eating lesson! They then used alphabet organizers and webs to describe grocery store items, and, lastly, they identified adjectives in a literary passage and replaced them with appropriate synonyms. The students were then required to apply what they learned about adjectives and synonyms by writing form poems and practicing working collaboratively to brainstorm and write their poems. These will be on display outside our rooms shortly.

Fourth grade boys and girls - Mrs. Krohn's General Studies classes

The fourth grade students have just been 'punished'! They have completed reading David Lubar's amazing book, Punished, in which they learned about puns, oxymorons, redundancies, and palindromes. The dictionary became their new best friend as they realized what a wonderful resource it can be. They used it to check the meanings and spellings of words as they do their daily work and to play word games in the classroom. In addition, fourth graders have become quite skilled at talking in puns and have realized that being punished can be a good thing.

Fifth grade boys - Rabbi Freundlich's Limudei Kodesh class

This past week, the boys celebrated their completion of parshas Yisro. The parsha ended with much discussion about the construction of the Mizbaiach, which had important messages about sensitivity to one's fellow man an about interpersonal relationships. We are excited about beginning parshas Mishpatim, which includes many key concepts that the boys will use as they progress in their Talmud studies. In honor of Tu B'Shevat, the class mastered an important section on the laws of brochos and prepared for the upcoming school-wide Brochos Bee.

Eighth grade boys - Mrs. Roberts' Language Arts class

This year's Mystery Dinner theme was high school football, with each participant in full costume and character for this event. First, we had "drinks" at the Marcus Hillel Center at Emory University and a brief limo ride through the neighborhood and around TDSA and to Mr. George and Mrs. Pam Glinsky's home. We chatted over hors d'oeuvres, as we revealed clues as to who stole the school mascot, and then enjoyed dinner while trying to determine "whodunnit". Rabbi Einzig visited and played charades with us. By the end of the evening, we learned that Binyomin Glinsky stole the mascot; he also figured out the clues! Thank you to Mrs. Rabinowitz for help with planning, to Rabbi Einizg and Mrs. Castle for participating, to Mrs. Burns for taking such beautiful pictures, and to Rabbi Tendler for ordering transportation and food. A very special thank you goes to Mr. and Mrs. Glinsky for allowing us to use their beautiful home as this year's mystery location and for helping with decorations.

Eighth grade boys and girls - Mrs. Castle's Science classes

The students have been learning the components of blood, and, have learned what determines the type of blood a person can receive during a blood transfusion. In order for students to know what type of blood they can receive, they performed their own blood typing lab. A special thanks to Mrs. Veronika Bari and Mrs. Sandra Leff, the mom R. N.'s, who came to help us carry out our lab.

Eighth grade boys- Rabbi Horowitz's Limudei Kodesh classes

The eighth grade boys completed the first perek of maseches Makos. One of the ways we reviewed was by having each boy pair up with a chavrusa from Rabbi Tendler's eighth grade. Each pair reviewed the parts of the perek that we learned. I am so proud of the hard work and effort the boys put in to finish the perek. We began the second perek and are off to a terrific start. In addition, we also began learning the 39 melachos (prohibited actions) of Shabbos. Each melacha is studied from the Torah source including how it was used in the Mishkan. We also learn about some practical applications of the melacha to contemporary life.

TDSA Scout Troop 613

Troop 613 spent Sunday afternoon at the Gwinnett Fair Grounds. There were no livestock exhibits, no pie baking contests, no gigantic pumpkins. This was Repticon, a huge exhibit of exotic snakes, reptiles, and amphibians from around the world. The squeamish didn't have to worry about the 15 foot-long pythons, and the albino anacondas; they were all safely squirming and wriggling in their closed containers. The thrill seekers were able to hold pretty much anything they wanted under the watchful eyes of their keepers. Although the boys didn't earn Reptile and Amphibian Study merit badges yet, they all left with an appreciation of the many shapes, sizes, colors and textures of Hashem's creations.

Next on the troop's calendar is an overnight and hike to the North Georgia Mountains over MLK, Jr. weekend to scale Brasstown Bald, our state's highest peak.

On Sunday, February 2nd, the boys will head back to Bert Adams Scout Reservation in Covington, where they camped during Summer 2012 and recently enjoyed an archery shoot, for a rifle shoot.

We'll be swimming again this Sunday evening, leaving TDSA circle 6:30 p. m., returning around 8: 30 p. m.

Community News

Dear TDSA neighbors,

Many of you have probably heard of various initiatives for certain neighborhoods to incorporate and form their own cities. Merry Hills Homeowner's Association (MHHA) has been involved behind the scenes with some of the mandatory studies that have been done to test the viability of these initiatives. Now that the Georgia Legislature is back in session it is likely that these bills will be brought to a vote which could result in a public referendum deciding whether we do or do not incorporate. Therefore, we will be holding a major public informational meeting at which representatives of the Lakeside City Alliance, the City of Briarcliff initiative, as well as some of our elected officials will be present to deliver talks explaining the various options on the table and how they would effect us. We strongly encourage everyone to attend as this issue can majorly impact our neighborhoods regarding such vital services such as, police, sanitation, roads, zoning and property taxes. There will be no vote at this meeting but it will be an opportunity to learn and understand the different options and their ramifications. The meeting will be Wednesday January 22 at 8:00 P.M. at Congregation Beth Jacob 1855 Lavista Road. The meeting is not limited to Merry Hills members or residents as any incorporation in our area would most likely include both sides of Lavista up to Briarcliff and possibly beyond. We therefore encourage you to share this email with all your friends and neighbors and ask them to attend as well. Looking forward to seeing you there next Wednesday.
Moshe Hiller

President: MHHA
