                              Announcing our MAIN EVENT HONOREES

                                                 for 2013-2014:

Join us for this gala event on February 23, 2014

A Message from our Head of School

Hashem is truly in control as is beautifully illustrated in this week's parsha, Beshalach. While the Children of Israel are in the desert, Hashem provides mun for them every day except for Shabbos. On erev Shabbos, the Jewish people collected a double portion for Shabbos. There was a group of people that challenged Hashem and told their friends to go out and collect mun on Shabbos. This group laid out mun on the ground to be found on Shabbos morning. However, their plan was foiled when Hashem sent birds to eat the mun on Shabbos morning, making their trick go astray. Hashem uses nature (birds) to foil their plan.

It is a minhag that we show our appreciation to the birds by feeding them this erev Shabbos for being the vehicle that Hashem used to carry out His plan.

This week, nature wreaked havoc on Atlanta, and across the nation. We had unusually cold temperatures. We were given the opportunity to appreciate that Hashem is in control of everything and to be thankful for our "creature comforts," such as heat, water, warm clothing, our homes, and more. Here at Torah Day School, we are blessed with a warm building and caring, dedicated teachers, who along with you and your children, braved the bitter cold, to continue to teach and learn. Thank you for helping to maintain our normal schedule despite the multiple school closing and unusual weather.

Good Shabbos.

Rabbi Joshua Einzig

Divrei Torah from our Eighth Graders

Parshas Bo by Tuvia Warga

In last week's parsha, Parshas Bo, in the first pasuk it says "bo el Paroh, come to Paroh". Why doesn't the pasuk say lech el Paroh, go to Paroh? An answer may be that Hashem was showing Moshe His support for him. When Hashem told Moshe to come to Paroh, he was saying, I am here waiting for you, and I am here to help you. This assurance of support for Moshe and Am Yisrael was emphasized earlier in Parshas Shemos, at the burning bush, and later on by krias yam suf. We can learn from here that Hashem is always there for us, and that we're never alone.

Parshas Beshalach by Maayan Schoen

The theme of our middle school girls' Shabbaton was music. Our main display, a depiction of Miriam leading the women in song through the split sea, comes straight out of this week's parsha. We used the pesukim

"ותקח מרים הנביאה אחות אהרון את התף בידה התצאן כל הנשים אחריה בתפים ובמחלת: ותען להם מרים שירו לה'..." בשלח:ט"ו:כ' & כ"א

"Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aharon, took the tambourine in her hand and all the women went forth with after her with tambourines and with dances: Miriam called out to them, "Sing to Hashem for He is exalted above the arrogant..." Beshalach: 15: 20 & 21

How did the women know, in their rush out of Egypt, to take tambourines, of all things?! Rashi tells us the following: the righteous women were certain that Hashem would perform miracles for them, so they took tambourines to express thanks afterwards. They foresaw and anticipated that they would have reason to sing and dance their thanks and praise to G-d! They made a beautiful spectacle out of their gratitude. We learn from them to always have בטחון in Hashem's abilities... and hope that there will be rejoicing in the future!
An Important Note for Parents

Please review your Edline email address and other settings. If you do not have a current email address in your information, teachers are unable to reply directly to any emails you send to them through Edline. Teachers want to respond promptly to your questions or concerns, and the most efficient way to do so is by a direct reply! Otherwise, you will need to include a reply address in the body of the message when sending emails to teachers or administrators through Edline.

Class Acts   פעילויות בכתות

Kindergarten boys and girls - Mrs. D. Friedman's classes

Clowning around in class is usually frowned upon. Kitah K turns that frown upside down on letter ל day. The children were encouraged to do tricks to delight their classmates and to act like ליצנים, clowns.

Second grade boys - Mrs. Stein's General Studies class

Second grade explorers are in outer space! Our explorers made a huge leap from reading fictional stories about outer space to doing actual research about the Milky Way Galaxy and designing their own informational displays about their planet of choice, Earth's moon, or the Sun. This unit of study was topped off with a Space Bee. The boys studied many facts about outer space and were excited to show that they had become space "experts"! They couldn't wait to answer questions such as the following: Why is Mercury very heavy? Why isn't Pluto considered a planet? Which planets have moons or rings? Who was the famous astronomer who began building his own telescopes in 1609? Which planets are terrestrial planets? Which planets are called gas giants? What are some of the physical features on the surface of Mars? Which planet is known as the Red Planet? Why? Why is Venus hotter than Mars if Mars is closer to the sun? What are dwarf planets? Which planets have days that are different from Earth days?

To keep their imaginations active, Mrs. Stein gave each boy his own "space rock". The boys then wrote letters to pen pals on imaginary planets that the space rocks came from! They told their new pen pals about themselves and asked their pen pals to write back and send pictures of themselves! Second grade explorers used their great sense of humor to invent names of planets, addresses, and names of pen pals. They loved reading their letters to their classmates. While learning many skills about letter writing, a good laugh was enjoyed by all.

Stay tuned for explorations in the opposite direction; the boys are about to explore oceans and the fantastic life forms that inhabit them.

Fifth grade girls - Mrs. R. Friedman's Limudei Kodesh class

Great things are always happening in 5G! Apart from our formal learning, we are using our talents and creativity in many different ways to enhance our studies. We sampled some journalism with our "Shoftim Shmooze" where we each picked a topic from Navi (Sefer Shoftim) to create a news item. Our artistic skills are being used weekly as we present each melacha from the 39 melachas in our own scrapbook. As they say, timing is everything. We have finally completed parshas Beshalach, just in time for this Shabbos of parshas Beshalach! We are currently working on posters to share some of what we learned in the Shira with the rest of the school.

Elementary grades science - Dr. Feingold's classes

Third grade students learned how moving tectonic plates create mountains. We used Play-Doh to model rock layers and discover the reason that cliffs show layers of rock and why sometimes those layers are angled or folded. To model this at home, make geologic cookies! Make four different colored batches of cookie dough. Layer them. Cut the cookies into squares and bake. The sides will be multicolored.

Fourth graders learned to identify the five Platonic solids and how natural phenomena form these shapes: tetrahedron (pyramid), hexahedron (cuboidal crystals of galena and salt), octahedron (crystals of magnetite, rubies and diamonds), dodecahedron and icosahedron (viruses, diatoms). Then they all made these three dimensional shapes using toothpicks and gumdrops.

Sixth grade girls - Mrs. Wiggins' Limudei Kodesh class

The sixth grade girls are completing parshas Shelach. Before winter break we conducted a mock trial of the miraglim and B'nei Yisrael in the case of the "Sin of the Spies". The girls were the lawyers for the prosecution and the defense. They brought proofs from the pesukim and Rashis we learned and gave convincing arguments. Ask your daughters about the judge and the verdict. The end of the parsha discusses the mitzvos of tzitzis, of gathering sticks on Shabbos, andof separating challah. We are learning about and performing this last mitzvah in class by braiding and baking our own challah. Enjoy the delicious Shabbos treat!

In Navi, we are learning about Shaul Hamelech, the very first king of Bnai Yisrael. We learned that Shaul had the special middah of tznius, and we discussed what that important concept means. In addition, we are creating our very own class newspaper called the "Tu B'shevat Times". Our newspaper will include articles about the Shivas Haminim, minhagim of Tu B'shevat, and more.

Physical Education - Coach Moore's classes

Our middle school boys are now taking their physical fitness test which includes the mile run, push-ups, sit ups, broad jump, and vertical test. It has been a challenge so far, but the boys are working hard. Our elementary physical education classes are starting their new units on basketball. Children who at first didn't enjoy playing basketball have worked extremely hard at improving their skills.

Elementary Enrichment - Ms. Lefont's classes

TDSA enrichment students are engaged in Science Olympiad events such as Gunk, Barge Building, Clay Boats, Chopper Challenge, and Egg Drop. Students followed the parameters of the various challenges and then tested their designs, using their results as an opportunity to improve the designs. Students exercise their inquiry and thinking skills throughout each activity.

TDSA Sports - Coach Moore

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys' Basketball Team, now 6-1 after defeating Howard School 60-10. Every player played exceptional team defense and offense, with a special acknowledgement to Emmanuel Glinsky who scored his first 4 points on the varsity team. Our next game is Tuesday at TDSA against Heritage Academy at 5:00 p. m.  If we win, we will be tied for first place within our division! Please come and cheer our boys on to victory. Your presence makes a huge difference; thank you to all of the TDSA staff members who support our teams.

After-school Science - Dr. Feingold's class

Wanted: a volunteer to help me with after school science on Mondays from 3:30-4:30 p. m. You do not need to know any science. Your help is needed to pass out supplies and assist the younger children with interesting experiments.
