Learn to Shimmy your core with Pilates and Bellydance! This 2 hour workshop is open to EVERYONE
wanting to learn Pilates and Bellydancing. The first 30 minutes will be a Pilates warm-up class focusing on breath, alignment, and core activation, followed by 90 minutes of introduction to Bellydance. This includes technique, movement isolations, and a short dance combination. You'll be moving and groov'in guaranteed! The Pilates component will be taught by owner of Embody Pilates, Bonny-Lynn Russell. The Bellydance component will be taught by guest Egyptian Bellydance Artist, Serena Kerbes from Calgary. Serena has performed internationally and is a joy to work with. We are very lucky to be hosting such a talented artist!

Inspiration of the Month: Helen Diotte!!!

We are very excited to share our new feature, "Inspiration of the month," where students of Embody Pilates share their experience. Our first feature is Helen Diotte. This is her story: Pilates - An Honest Personal Journey Honestly I have never really been a fan of... well.... exercise. I was ready to accept how easily I became winded and that my youthful little figure was very much lost in time with no hope of seeing the light of day again. After all I was approaching 50 and had come to believe that this is what happens and I was content to stay like this. It was just easier wasn't it? To stay like this?
Oh sure I ski, hike and bike. And to be honest I didn't perform any of the activities with much vigor, strength or finesse. Aerobic classes...forget it. I didn't like overheating and sweating. I can't recall a time that I would (or could... to be honest) stretch...it hurt too much! But there was always a nagging corner of my mind that I wasn't really very happy with my shape and my general lack of good health.
I was introduced to Pilates in May of 2012. I signed up not really thinking that I would stick with it and honestly I had a pretty bad attitude. I began with private sessions and announced to the instructor Bonny-Lynn "I don't like exercise" and "I don't stretch" What a great way to start. She is so enthusiastic and authentic in her love of Pilates, it didn't take long before I was hooked. I was intensely drawn to this mental and physical challenge.
During my first class I became completely and utterly intimidated watching the other students perform what seemed like impossible moves. I asked another member "please tell me you were like me when you started". She smiled as she said "oh yea, you're doing just fine." It struck me that despite the varying levels of ability there are no egos here. There are newly formed friendships and a camaraderie - we are there for the same reason - To be healthy and vibrant individuals who carry over what we learn in these classes to all aspects of our lives.
I notice that at the end of each class, everyone has a smile on their face. Who does THAT after exercise? This is powerful stuff.
And honestly...you couldn't drag me out of these classes.

Free Movie Night: Friday Feb 22nd 7-8:30pm

January's movie night was a HUGE Success with close to 30 eager students attending to learn more about the History of Pilates. This month, we will be watching a documentary on Eve Gentry: The Power of Pilates. This powerful film shows Joseph Pilates working with Eve after her Breast cancer surgery and how Eve was inspired by Pilates to create her Gentry Technique. It will be a powerful film and glimpse into the rich history of PIlates.
Did we mention there is FREE POPCORN?!?! :)

Pilates Prop Week: Feb 19th-Feb 25th
|  Once a month, we like to utilize Pilates Props in our Mat classes. The Magic Circle and Foam roller are excellent tools to help open the body, increase our body awareness and deepen our connections. Due to their popularity, students asked to be notified ahead of time so they can load up on their mat classes that week. Mark it on your calendars, Feb 19-Feb 25 (the studio will be closed on Holiday Monday Feb 18 so Prop week continues through Monday Feb 25) and be prepared for the fun! Embody School of Pilates is starting soon!

Our Teacher-Training program will be starting on March 1st. We are thrilled to be hosting students from all over the country as well as some familiar local enthusiasts! Please be aware that from March 1-10th the studio will be extra busy and our new trainees will be observing classes and sessions as part of their internship. This is a vital part of their training program so we appreciate your co-operation in allowing them to watch your classes. Let the learning begin!
P.S. A few students have inquired about billet accommodations. If you have an extra room and are willing to keep a student for 10 days, please speak to Bonny-Lynn or email her at canmore@embodypilates.ca. They will be needing a bedroom, bathroom and access to the kitchen. No cooking is required.

New Teachers: Rebecca Reid and Basia Porczyk
| Rebecca and Basia have been studying Pilates with Bonny-Lynn extensively since September and are ready to share their knowledge with you! Over the next several weeks, Rebecca and Basia will be popping up on the schedule and teaching some mat & equipment classes. This is a great opportunity to gain a fresh perspective and have new eyes watch you. Let's welcome them with open arms and be willing to learn. (It's also an opportunity for Bonny-Lynn to take class so don't be surprised if she shows up on the mat beside you! )
