Generation Gap

There are two large segments of our population that affect the way products and services are marketed: Boomers and Millennials. The groups are similar in size and account for about 50% of the U.S. population. As target audiences, they are very influential. Because of age difference and social influencers, each group reacts to different stimuli, which is called a cohort effect.outdoor-breakfast-man.jpg

Boomers are ages 49-67 and Millennials are ages 19-36. Boomers are the wealthiest generation, and Millennials are the most educated and less likely to be married.

Hardwired vs. Untethered

Boomers are more likely to watch TV. About 50% have three or more TVs in their homes. Almost half of people under age 35 have no TV in their homes, and are more likely to watch shows on a mobile device. They also do not have landlines and are 3 times more likely to have a smartphone. They prefer to be totally mobile.

Listener vs. Sharer

Boomers are twice as likely to read the newspaper, while Millennials are young-couple.jpg two times more likely to read magazines. In addition, Boomers tend to catch up with friends "by appointment," and Millennials tend to "update" their status online about 3 times per day. They prefer the dynamic nature of mobile interactions.

Physical vs. Virtual

Boomers are 4 times more likely to belong to a civic club that meets in-person, while Millennials make up half of all bloggers and prefer a virtual setting.

Advertising

For marketing efforts to each of these groups, take note: Boomers like repetitive, nostalgic and relatable commercials, while Millennials prefer dynamic and colorful advertisements.

If you're looking to do international marketing, up-and-coming Millennial markets include Brazil, India, China, and Russia.

Networking Tip

Stay Focused

When developing new connections, make sure you keep your attention on your conversation. Maintain eye contact and let the person know that you are listening by asking good follow-up questions.

In addition, stay focused on your networking goals and keep conversations to a few minutes. This will allow you to achieve your objectives for the event as well as being respectful of your new acquaintance's goals.
