Vendor Relationships


florist-woman-sale.jpg For larger client businesses, it's important to develop a good client/vendor relationship. There are many aspects to consider in maintaining the account. Some you have control over and some you do not.


External Factors

As a vendor you need to keep an eye on the details of your customer's business. What types of situations can affect the decision to buy? There may be changes in the economic or political landscape that affect how the company does business. Maybe a new regulation will affect their profitability. Has a new competitor recently entered the field? As part of your service, discuss what's happening in the marketplace with your client. Keep the lines of communication open in order to anticipate any changes in budgets or spending. 


Internal Factors

Each company has its own structure and policies for purchasing. By asking questions, find out the hierarchy for decision making and get to know what the priorities are for the organization. This will help you to focus on specific products or services that fit the company's needs. In situations with input or approval from different team members, many times it comes down to personal preferences. And, you may not be able to influence that. Or, maybe you will.


To build a solid relationship, get to know your client's business and focus on helping them find solutions.

When meeting new people, share the aspects of your job or business that bring you joy. You could talk about a great project you worked on, or how you helped a client. Positive energy is contagious and your new connections will pick up on it. People like to hear about someone enjoying their work, so show enthusiasm for your business.
