 Testimonials
"You're the best! Thank you for your help! Without you, I wouldn't have reached my goal!"
Client testimonials can be powerful marketing tools. They immediately tell a potential client what you do, what type of customer you work with, and highlight your strengths.
Requests
When you approach your client for a testimonial, be sure to give them some guidelines as to what you are looking for. What aspect of your services would you like them to focus on? If they like you enough to provide a recommendation in writing, then they also may want to share everything. So, it helps to give them a topic or two to talk about. In instances when your client provides a long testimonial, ask permission to use portions of it in your promotional materials. Also, ask if you are permitted to use their full name and title with their quotes. They may prefer that you use a less revealing signature.
How to Use
Testimonials work best when used sparingly. Don't overwhelm a potential customer with too many stories. Try to collect client recommendations over time, so that you have a variety to choose from. Then, use the ones that most closely fit what you are promoting.
Don't be shy about asking for a testimonial. Clients who are happy with your work are usually more than willing to help you build your business. The best time to ask is towards the end of a successful project when the client is in a positive mood and recalls the details of your efforts. |
Creating Your Network
We usually think of networking as going to a business card exchange and spending the evening handing out business cards. Actually, you can create unusual opportunities to network. Use your alumni network of high school or college friends. Stay in touch with former work colleagues. Organize fun events outside of work like a hiking group, book club, or share a mountain house. Create a dinner club and invite friends and colleagues and extend the invitation to their friends and colleagues. Volunteer for a cause that's meaningful to you. In this way, you are expanding your connections to people outside of your professional field.
Try something new...and see who you meet! |
