UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Provide Feedback on ICT Sector Guidance

The EU is developing guidance for the ICT sector on implementing the UN Guiding Principles, as discussed at the EICC membership meeting in July.  The guidance is intended to be practical and useful, and the guidance document is designed to help companies show that they respect human rights throughout their activities and business relationships.

The draft ICT-sector guidance document is available for public comment until February 13.  It covers information on policy commitments and embedding respect into policy documents, human rights due diligence activities (assessing impacts, integrating due diligence measures, tracking systems, and communicating results), and grievance mechanisms.  Information on the draft guidance and process for submitting feedback is available here.

March 21 Stakeholder Session: Use of Student and Young Workers Through the Lens of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

The EICC Winter Membership Meeting will include a stakeholder session on the use of student and young workers through the viewpoint of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The March 21 session will provide a refresher on the Principles and how they relate to the EICC, information on how the UNGPs are viewed in Asia and the implications of their implementation, and practical examples that address the use of student and young workers, as well as how this intersects with the Guiding Principles.

Help Plan This Session

EICC members are encouraged to help plan the session.  Contact Wendy Dittmer to help or for more information.

Working Hours Data Collection Template

Join the EICC Pilot Program

The EICC Working Hours Data Collection Template was released last week to help EICC companies collect working hours data from their facilities.  Data collected during a pilot phase will be used to establish a baseline for discussion at the EICC Winter Membership Meeting.

The template is part of the EICC strategy on working hours to "make a measurable impact" on this issue by 2014, as adopted by EICC members at the July membership meeting.  EICC members will be encouraged after the pilot phase to use the template with their suppliers, and to use the data it provides to establish collaborative approaches to reduce excessive overtime.

Interested companies may use the templates immediately, and are asked to collect data retroactive to Jan. 1, 2013.  Completed templates will be sent to EICC according to the membership compliance protocols that ensure confidentiality.  All data will be anonymized and used only in aggregate form.

Contact Brad Cameron for more information, or for a template and instructions.

EICC-ON and SAQ Updates:

Change to VAP Audit Observer Process

The VAP OMT has changed how observers to VAP audits are selected. Previously, notice was provided to firms listed on "Attachment B" (Auditee Approved Recipient Distribution List), and the first firm to respond received the single observation spot.  This often resulted in delays and other challenges when the first to respond was not the most appropriate firm.  As a result, auditees will now indicate to the APM which company should be selected (must be an EICC member).  Observers are expected to provide critical feedback to the VAP Work Group, and the APM will work with auditees to select alternative observer companies when this does not occur.   Contact Christina Dobbs, Mike McDonnell, or Balan Shanmuganathan for more information.

Pre-Audit SAQ EOL

The Tools Management Work Group removed the pre-audit SAQ, which is no longer needed.  The EICC-ON toolbox was streamlined as a result of higher completion levels of corporate and facility SAQs before audits.  Information previously entered into a pre-audit SAQ will not be lost, but new pre-audit SAQs can no longer be initiated.  The work group believes this will make the SAQ completion and audit preparation process simpler.   Contact Christina DobbsMike McDonnell, or Hong Ling for more information.
