FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Todd Bornhauser, Lakeville Chamber President
THE BIG EVENT IS HERE!
Yes, it is time for the Lakeville YEA! Investor Panel program on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in the Kenwood Trail Middle School Auditorium. A reception will take place at 5:00 p.m., with the program to follow at 5:30 p.m. Eighteen Middle School Students from Lakeville Area Schools will present their 11 business ideas to a panel of 12 real-life investors to compete for funding for their new business! Think Shark Tank meets the Apprentice!
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a ground-breaking program that takes students through the process of starting and running real businesses over the course of a full academic year. YEA! students, as a class, visit area business, meet successful entrepreneurs, meet with professionals (attorneys, accountants, bankers, graphic designers, web developers, insurance providers, etc.), develop a business or social movement idea and plan, and work with mentors. Students then pitch their ideas "live" to a panel of investors made of local business and community leaders with real dollars at stake to obtain funding and take all of the steps necessary to, and then actually launch their venture.
THE CHAMBER NEEDS YOUR HELP PLEASE!
1. I need two people who can help with registration from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
2. I need someone who can run the Power Point presentation the night of the event.
3. I need someone who would be willing to take pictures the night of the event, our investor panel and award winners.
FINALLY, I need Chamber members, family and friends to attend the event and support the 11 student businesses as they compete for $6,000 in investor funds. The Lakeville Area Chamber is the the first organization in Minnesota to sponsor a YEA! and we could not have done it without our organization's support. Please mark your calendar and make time to come to the event.
Please call the Chamber office at 952-469-2020 if you are willing to help me out next Wednesday. I promise it will be worth your time and energy.

FROM THE CHAIR of the CHAIR
By Bob Curtis, 2014 Lakeville Chamber Chair
Greeting fellow chamber members,
The snow is disappearing, the temperatures are in the mid 30's and spring high school tournaments are upon us. That must mean one thing, the Lakeville Chamber's Annual Landscape and Home/Consumer Showcase Expo is upon us. Join fellow Chamber members this Saturday from 9-3 at Lakeville North to see what's new for 2014, find a way to help start or finish your project or take part in one of many seminar's, so you're ready to enjoy Minnesota's fine spring and summer months. I have participated in the show for 9 years and really enjoy the face to face interaction I get with a couple thousand Lakeville residents, some of my current clients and also finding a few new clients. If you have not participated in the show before or it has been a few years, there are still 2 spots available so contact Linda Rynda to reserve your spot before they are gone!
"Thrive for 500" is a way to set our sights on the next big Chamber achievement, 500 members strong! When you are working with a vendor take a moment to ask them if they have considered becoming a Lakeville Chamber Member. Tell them the benefits and successes you have had being a Chamber member and then make an introduction to Todd or Linda who will take it from there. One way to maximize your Chamber membership is to attend a morning brew, after hours, luncheon, ribbon cutting or grand opening. This is a great way to network with fellow Chamber Members you have known for years or meet someone new who is eager to do business with other fellow Chamber members and become part of the 'Chamber Family'. Like everything you do in business and personal life, the more you get involved the more you will get out of it. Who doesn't want to meet a new business contact, make a friend, or get a referral for your next big sale, I know I do.
It takes many volunteer and staff hours to make the Lakeville Chamber one of the best. I want to thank the many members who give of their time and talents to make our organization successful, it is greatly appreciated by me, the Chamber board and staff. I encourage you to find away to get involved on a committee, a fundraiser or event to help continue our success and to help the Chamber be Better, Faster and Smarter in 2014.
Have a great spring and start thinking GOLF!

Let's Focus on What's Best for Children
More than 250 individuals gathered in February at the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce's Education Summit. The participants represented a diverse cross-section of Minnesotans from business leaders, parents, students, teachers, school administrators and leading education advocates for school change at the state and national levels.
By introducing high-caliber national figures with ideas for common-sense reforms in Minnesota, and highlighting several promising local initiatives, our goal was to ignite a greater urgency for changes to the education system. The summit served as a springboard for the Minnesota Chamber and our local partners across the state to advance common-sense solutions at the 2014 Legislature to ensure a world-class workforce.
Minnesota has a tradition of exceptional schools and exceptional students. We boast high scores on national and international tests. Some of our kids are doing great. But if you look a little deeper, as The Education Trust's Kati Haycock showed us at the event, there is trouble. The gaps in academic achievement are narrowing in the elementary schools, but any traction there is being lost as students advance in the high schools.
Addressing Minnesota's distressing achievement gap between white students and students of color has been something the community has been talking about for a long time, but so far we've only made slight gains. We have a long way to go to ensure that all students have opportunities for lifelong success.
The summit had its detractors - those who charged that this was just another attempt by big corporations to run schools. It's disappointing that the rocks were thrown before the first speaker stepped to our podium. In truth, the ideas advanced echoed exactly what we are hearing from citizens across the state.
A poll recently conducted by the Minnesota Chamber showed strong support to: Provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while in high school; give parents easy-to-understand data on how their students are doing; evaluate teacher performance, and use the results as a key factor in determining teacher tenure and pay; improve the performance of the college programs preparing teachers.
The collective message from speakers at the summit was clear: Put politics aside and do what's best for the children. The 2014 Legislature is about to begin, and we're ready to move forward again with common-sense ideas like staffing flexibility that will keep "rising star" teachers in the classroom and expanded dual credit options to lower college costs.
Improving the strength and effectiveness of our education system so that all Minnesotans are prepared for success will strengthen our workforce and strengthen Minnesota's economy. As we heard clearly at our summit, it's time to stop talking about the problem, and put a full-court press on embracing solutions that are good for all our children.
