YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a groundbreaking and exciting after school program that transforms middle and high school students into confident entrepreneurs. Through the year-long programs, students generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their own companies.

The Lakeville Chamber Board, with an endorsement from Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder, is exploring the opportunity to bring this powerful program to the Lakeville community.  It will, however, require cooperation from local businesses and community leaders who are interested in the development of a life changing program that will not only promote an entrepreneurial spirit for the talented students but will also positively impact the entire community.  Together we can strengthen the next generation of America's business leaders.

For further information regarding this program, contact Todd Bornhauser at the Chamber office.

BUSINESS & EDUCATION COMMITTEE
By Chair Bob Finke, Family Health Medical Clinic

The Business and Education Committee met on February 22nd at Lakeville North High School.
We welcomed a new member, Scot Kretzschmar from Thrivent Financial Group.

At that meeting we met Mike Zweber, a teacher at Lakeville North.  Mr. Zweber and Cindy Nolan are the leaders in setting up the Business Academy at Lakeville North.
Mr. Zweber outlined the plans for this academy for us.  This academy as well as the Technology Academy at Lakeville South will be introduced to the community at the Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on March 12th.  At that time Lisa Snyder, Superintendent of Lakeville Area Community Schools will be the featured speaker.  There will be opportunities for individuals and companies in Lakeville to participate in these exciting new educational offerings which will begin in the fall of 2013.  Students will need to visit companies and also participate in mentorships as part of the curriculum for  both academies.

In January we met with the staff at the Community Education facility in Downtown Lakeville.  Coming up in March we will be greeting the teachers and staff at Lakeville South High School on Marcy 6 ( 7:30 AM) and at Christina Huddleston Elementary (8:00 AM).  Please come and join us as we meet, and thank, those who  educate our students in Lakeville.

Last month we also were invited to attend a presentation by the New Entrepreneurs Academy at the Chamber office.  Todd Bornhauser is gathering information about this program that is a sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce a
nd the National Chamber Foundation.  We will be getting together to review the information and to determine whether Lakeville will submit an application to participate in this effort.
There is not a New Entrepreneurs Academy in the state of Minnesota at this time so it may be an opportunity for our community to lead the way.

Our committee has been working with the teaching staff at the Area Learning Center to provide speakers who will introduce their field of work to the students.  Thanks to Police Chief Tom Vonhof, Bruce Rydeen at Cerron Developments, Steve Mielke from the City of Lakeville and Dave Bellow our Dakota County Sheriff for their assistance in identifying speakers for this program.

Our next committee meeting is on Friday, March 22nd, 7:30 AM, at Lakeville North High School.  We invite all Chamber members to come and participate.
