THE POWER OF TEAMWORK
By Sheila Longie, 2013 Chamber Chair

2013 IS ABOUT TEAMWORK  sheila longie chair 2013

It is my honor and privilege to serve as your 2013 Chamber Chair.  I feel fortunate to be leading an organization that has a solid footing in our community.

The success of our Chamber can be measured by the many accomplishments of my predecessors.  Not only has our membership continued to grow, but so too has our financial stability.  This is due not only to the hard work and dedication of our professional staff but also our members who have taken an active role in our Chamber by supporting our fundraisers, events, luncheons, seminars, and sponsorships (just to name a few).

I am very excited about this year's board.  At our fall retreat we targeted two areas of focus for 2013:  a) Advocacy and b) Marketing/Recruitment/Retention of businesses in the Airlake Industrial Park and the Business Park.  In addition, we have solidified our marketing committee and are looking forward to getting more involved in social media...a new concept for us.

I also have several personal goals I want to achieve and share with you:
*Encourage our members to buy local. We need to support/patronize our locally owned and operated businesses whenever possible;
*Collaborate with local schools on educational and marketing ventures; and
*Capitalize on being the 19th BEST CITY IN AMERICA - and "Positioned to Thrive"!

However, as your Chair, I feel my foremost responsibility is to ensure that our board is working for YOU.  And because we are all in this together, I encourage all of you to become more involved in 2013!

Let's not forget the power of teamwork!  "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Sincerely,
Sheila Longie, Shred Right, Inc.

Free Small Business Consulting to Dakota County Businesses, Residents

Starting or growing a small business isn't easy, and hiring a trusted advisor to help get a business off the ground is usually very expensive. Open to Business Dakota County provides free, confidential, one-on-one assistance from expert staff, customized to meet the needs of small business owners and operators.  Clients receive help in planning and organizing their business ventures, financial management, marketing and regulatory compliance.  Additionally, a small business loan fund can help entrepreneurs access the capital they need to grow their business.

Open to Business Dakota County is a partnership among the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers (MCCD), the Dakota County Community Development Agency (CDA), and the cities of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Hastings, Inver Grove Heights, Lakeville, Rosemount, South St. Paul, and West St. Paul, and the Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville, River Heights, Hastings, and Dakota County Regional Chambers of Commerce.

Beginning monthly in February, an expert Open to Business consultant with the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers will offer free consulting services in each community.

The Business and Education Committee met on January 25th at Orchard Lake Elementary.  Following our meeting the Committee hosted a teacher appreciation breakfast for the staff at Orchard Lake.  This breakfast featured a selection of healthy options to coincide with the efforts of the Orchard Lake Staff to emphasize healthy habits for their students.

The Committee also visited the Area Learning Center on January 17th and Lake Marion Elementary on January 7th.

Our next teacher appreciation events will be on March 6th at Lakeville South HS and March 8 at Christina Huddleston Elementary.  Please join us as we recognize the teachers for their efforts with our students.

We have received a request from the Area Learning Center staff to help them identify speakers who can introduce students to the following careers:  Computer Programmer, DNR Conservation Officer, Police Officer, Military Personnel, Movie/TV Producer, Psychologist, Engineer, Architect, Video Game Designer.

We have also received a request from a teacher at Cherry View Elementary for ideas and projects for students using the iPad as well as Engineers who would work with them on areas related to the science curriculum.

For anyone interested in Art, Cherry View is also planning an Art and Pasta night sometime in March.  They would love to have business partners for this project.

If you have people you can recommend for any of these requests please contact Bob Finke at 952-461-0500.
