PRESIDENTS CORNER
By 2012 President Karen Wentworth, HOBO Inc./Chemquest Inc.

Karen Wentworth 2012TIME TO SAY THANK YOU!

It is hard to believe that November is half over and December will be upon us all too soon.  Where has 2012 gone?  It is this time of year as we approach Thanksgiving, when we should take the time to thank the people in our lives that make us who we are and who help us accomplish our daily tasks and long term goals.  I would like to take that time right now.

First of all, I would like to thank the Chamber Staff - Todd, Linda, Jeanne and Michele.  Without them the Chamber would not function.  Through their assistance, we as businesses can grow stronger.  We have a great base on which to continue to build.  Our plans to grow our Chamber through membership and advocacy start with our great staff.

I would also like to take the time to thank the Board of Directors for the Chamber, especially our executive Board made of Sheila Longie, Bruce Rydeen, Glenn Starfield and Bob Curtis.  It is incredible to work with such passionate people who share the goal of making the Chamber even better.

Next I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our committee chairpersons and the volunteers who spend uncounted hours in the betterment of the Chamber.  Whether it is Mike Budde who chaired the Fall Gala Committee or Mike Lebens, the Golf Tournament Chair or Trent Hochsprung of the Landscape & Home Expo or Roz Peterson on the Chamber Foundation Committee or Bob Finke on the Business & Education Committee (to name a few) - the committee leaders assisted the Chamber Staff and Chamber members to make the Chamber better and perhaps have a little fun along the way.  A special shout out to all the Ambassadors who probably put in more hours than many of us could guess - thank you!  The many volunteer who work on all of the committees also deserve our gratitude and thanks.

We have had several major sponsors this year for our major fundraisers.  Terra Garden Center was the major sponsor of the Landscape & Home Expo.  Anchor Bank stepped up to the "tee" to be the major sponsor of the Golf Tournament and Jeff Belzer's Chevrolet and Treasure Island Resort & Casino were the major sponsors for the recent Fall Gala.  We had many other sponsors at different levels for each event and I cannot begin to thank them enough for their continued support.  Yes, the sponsors get some name recognition, but many sponsor because they know the importance of the Chamber and what it means for business.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you, the members of the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce.  I have been proud to serve as your president in 2012.  Members all have different reasons to join the Chamber - advocacy, networking, socialization or gaining customers & exposure.  We all hope that being members will help our bottom line, but sometimes being a Chamber member is just the "right thing to do".   For whatever reason you have for being a member, I appreciate your participation and membership.  Thank you!  I hope everyone has a Blessed Thanksgiving!

BUSINESS & EDUCATION COMMITTEE

On Monday, November 5th approximately 100 careers were represented at the annual career fair.  There were over 750 high school juniors from Lakeville South and Lakeville North who attended this event which was held at Lakeville South High School.  Many thanks to all of the Chamber members who were present to provide information to the students.  A special thank you to Brian Knapp of Fairview Ridges Hospital for his extraordinary efforts to present this program to our students.

Our next committee meeting will be December 14 at Lakeville North High School from 7:30 - 8:30 AM.  All Chamber members are welcome to come and learn about the Business and Education Committee and new members are always welcome.

Teacher appreciation breakfasts coming up are at Lakeville North High School on December 5th at 7:30 AM and at Cherryview Elementary on December 7th at 8:30 AM.  All Chamber members, not only our committee members, are invited to attend and recognize our teachers for their great work.

We are introducing new programs in reading and science as pilot programs at Eastview Elementary in the near future.  Kathy Bennett of Tutor Time is leading this initiative.  More news on this effort will be coming soon including opportunities for Chamber businesses and individuals to become involved.

Please mark you calendars for the annual college Financial Aid night which will be held at Lakeville South High School on January 14th from 6 to 9 PM.  Steve Lorenz will be organizing this very popular program again this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Bob Finke can be reached at Family Health Medical Clinic
