Advantages Of Piezoelectric Transformers Over Electromagnetic Transformers

There are numerous advantages to using piezoelectric transformers over electromagnetic transformers. Piezoelectric transformers are:

  • Small and lightweight
  • Highly efficient: 93-96% at outputs ≤ 30W
  • Do not generate electromagnetic noise
  • Deliver a more uniform output
  • Non-flammable
Piezo transformers are typically constructed from hard PZT materials. They consist of two ceramic components, an input and output component, which are typically combined in a single element. One popular piezo transformer design is the Rosen transformer.

Piezoelectric transformers are most effective in these applications:

  • LCD backup inverters for laptop computers
  • Driving piezo actuators in optics and medical equipment
  • Fluorescent light tubes
  • X-ray tubes

APC's Sales Engineers  would be happy to discuss your piezo transformer design or provide a quote for the piezoelectric ceramics necessary for your transformer.
