Piezo Flow Sensors from APC
What's your flow rate?
Did you know that two piezoelectric ceramic transducers, positioned a distance apart in a flow path, can be used to measure the velocity of a gas or liquid in the flow path?
The two transducers simultaneously transmit short pulse signals, switch to receiving mode, receive the signal from their upstream / downstream counterpart, and then repeat. If the medium in the flow path is static, the delay time between signal transmission and reception in the upstream direction and downstream direction are equal. A medium in motion, however, will accelerate downstream pulses and delay the upstream pulses in proportion to the velocity of the flow.
APC supplies thousands of piezoelectric ceramics every year to be used in liquid and gas flow meters in the manner described above.
