A piezo cylinder typically has silver electrodes on the outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID) surfaces with leads attached to each surface. The movement of piezo cylinders is caused by a change in wall thickness when voltage is applied. The change in wall thickness causes movement in the length and diameter dimensions.
Piezoelectric crystals can be made into a variety of different shapes to achieve the desired vibration mode and related characteristics. In addition to having a good understanding of the material being chosen, knowing the shape dependent equations for the frequency constant, capacitance, static displacement and static voltage is a must.
