Each week you will learn how to rid yourself of cravings & extra weight by biochemically changing your body coupled with stress reductions techniques. Sign up for as few or as many workshops as you choose. There is a discount for signing up for all 6. In addition, we bring attention to American Heart Month and the amazing strides of Go Red for Women. In our Healthy Living section, we discuss natural remedies for menstrual symptoms. We also offer a reflection on the new gallery of photos in our West Orange office. We remind everyone our walk-in flu clinics continue until supplies last. And, you'll find a new interesting "Medical Fact".

American Heart Month - Go Red!goRed
February is American Heart Month.
According to the CDC, "uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. In fact, more than 67 million Americans have high blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are 4 times more likely to die from a stroke and 3 times more likely to die from heart disease, compared to those with normal blood pressure."
High blood pressure often shows no signs or symptoms, which is why having your blood pressure checked regularly is important. It's easy to get your blood pressure checked. You can get screened at your doctor's office and drugstores or even check it yourself at home, using a home blood pressure monitor.

Friday, February 5th is National Wear Red Day® to support "Go Red for Women," an organization with the mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and encourage donations to support fund research during American Health Month.

Why Go Red?
Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds.
Fortunately, these statistics can be changed since 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. Supporting Go Red For Woman helps funds educational programs to increase women's awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

It's also a great reminder to make your heart health a priority and schedule your well-woman visit, a prevention check-up to review a woman's overall health so her doctor can measure blood pressure, check cholesterol and look for signs of heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. Then encourage others through your social channels to do the same using the hashtags, #GoRedWearRed and #WellWomenVisit.

Caring for your heart through a healthy diet and regular physical activity is the secret weapon to preventing heart disease.  The real preventative power lies with real changes to your lifestyle - which can reduce the risk for heart disease by as much as 80 percent.

Healthy Living: Natural Remedies For Menstrual Symptomshealthyliving
90% of women report having painful menstrual cramps at least some of the time. A recent video posted by Michael Greger, MD, on his site NutritionFacts.org suggests "the essence of fruits of a grassy, fragrant plant known as Foeniculum vulgare variety dulce (fennel) ..has been used in the Mediterranean area to relieve painful menstruation for many years."

In a recent study, 52% of registered patients in the study group stated the treatment was excellent, 20% reported moderate and 28% as slight.

For other premenstrual symptoms like nausea, vomiting, weakness, lower backache and headache, fennel also seemed to relieve symptoms, however it was found that fennel might increase menstrual bleeding as it contributes to muscle relaxation of the uterus.

One of the overall benefits of using natural menstrual remedies like fennel is that it reduces the side effects of over the counter or prescription/chemical medications and is less expensive.

In addition, ginger was found to be a highly effective treatment in the reduction of menstrual blood loss and provided a "better quality of life" for women in the study. It also helped with the more emotional premenstrual mood, physical and behavior symptoms.

Natural remedies have different effects on different people. What might work for some may not work for others.

Art Gallerygallery
If you have visited the West Orange office recently you may have seen the new installation of family portraits, most capturing pregnancy and newborns. These photos of local women and families capture memories of a lifetime.

The photography was shot by Hartshorn Portraiture, many in their beautiful sunlit studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. An award winning photographer, Mac Hartshorn's signature style focuses on the natural beauty of the individual during the photo session. For pregnancy photos, they offer beautiful gowns which showcase the growing belly. The studio suggests scheduling a session in the eighth month of your pregnancy.

For a newborn shoot they recommend booking a date in the first couple of weeks of your baby's life while your child is still 'sleepy'.  Hartshorn Portraiture is known for their attention to detail and quality. For a visual treat visit their website:
