Medical Fact

 "I didn't know that!"

The Pap Smear was named after Dr. George N. Papanicolaou, who, in 1928, found that cancer cells in vaginal smears could help doctors find early stages of cervical cancer.

In the 1930s, cervical cancer was the leading cause of cancer death in women (37%).  Since then, the rate of cervical cancer deaths started to fall largely due to the pap smear, the most successful cancer screening test ever invented.

Vaginitis - What Is It?vaginitis
Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina and is very common. It effects women of all ages, but is most common in reproductive years. As many as one-third of women will have symptoms of vaginitis sometime during their lives.

Symptoms
Symptoms of vaginitis include:
  • Redness, irritation or discomfort in the vagina or vulva
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Itching or burning around your vagina
  • Feeling of needing to urinate more often
Causes
Vaginitis can be caused by a change in the balance of yeast and bacteria in the vagina which creates the lining of the vagina to be inflamed. It is often the result of a yeast infection, when the natural yeast in the vagina grows too much and causes an infection. It can also be caused by bacterial vaginitis, when there is a change in the normal balance of different types of bacteria in the vagina.

Other causes include:
  •  the use of antibiotics
  • changes in hormone levels (due to pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause)
  • douching or spermicides
  • wearing wet workout clothes or bathing suit for an extended period of time
  • scented feminine products or laundry detergents
  • intercourse
  • other infections.

Atrophic Vaginitis
Women with atrophic vaginitis experience vaginal irritation without discharge. It is caused when a woman's level of estrogen falls during breastfeeding, menopause or damage to the ovaries (ie. surgery). Lower levels of estrogen make vaginal tissue dry and thin.

Diagnosis
Vaginitis can be diagnosed under a microscope from a small sample of the discharge from your vagina, extracted by your health care provider.

Treatment
Treatment is fairly simple and non-invasive with a prescription cream or pill. If you think you might have vaginitis, it is important to see your health care provider for an examination and diagnosis.

Healthy Living: Diets

Excerpt from Heels To Laces blog postDiets

So many people spend their lives crash dieting only to resort back to an old lifestyle and experience weight gain over and over again. Repetitive crash dieting has significant health consequences and can be detrimental in the long run.

Over the decades, we have been exposed to a plenitude of "crash diets". From the latest juicing craze to the original Master Cleanse of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.

Research has repetitively shown that rapid weight loss can:

  • Deprive your body of essential nutrients
  • Increase your risk of dehydration
  • Increase heart rate due to dehydration
  • Compromise muscle mass
  • Lead to osteoporosis over the long term
  • You will gain back all the weight you lost after you go off the "diet"

The liver detoxifies your body, not a "cleanse."

To sustain a steady weight for years and stop being married to the scale, it just takes maintaining a healthy, non-processed, balanced diet and regular exercise routine.

No crash diet can speed up your metabolism. Only exercise can.  When healthy eating and exercising is part of a daily lifestyle and something you actually enjoy - you no longer have to deprive yourself repeatedly until you are forced to binge out of pure withdrawal.

It's ok to allow yourself to indulge once in a while, as long as your regular routine is consistent. Consistency over the long term can help alleviate the time, energy and money spend on counterproductive crash diets.
