Summer Reading Buddies
Make Summer Count!

Add Summer Reading Buddies to your summer plans and prevent "Summer Slide."

It's officially summertime, and for kids, that means two precious months of sweet, sticky freedom.

But when kids from low-income families leave school for the summer, the outlook isn't always so sunny. While their more affluent peers may be visiting libraries, attending summer camp and reading their favorite stories every night, kids in need often spend the summer months without access to books and learning opportunities.

Over the years, things add up - by the end of 5th grade, kids from low-income families are nearly three grades behind their peers in reading skills.

At Summer Reading Buddies, we are fighting the "Summer Slide" and invite you to join us for an hour, a day or every day!

Studies show that kids' reading skills improve when they have access to books over the summer - and this is especially true for kids in need. In fact, children who are given access to books over the course of three consecutive summers perform 35-40% better on reading achievement tests than those without.

Celebration and Award Season

As the school year comes to an end, we are celebrating in each of our schools so that our mentors and students have one last chance to say goodbye for the summer and to show appreciation for all they do.

Our mentors are also winning awards:

Wendy Hollander, a SMART and Holocaust Remembrance Program volunteer, is also on the Scholarship Committee and has created and conducted several VIEW workshops for our other mentors, was honored at the Westchester Jewish Council's 19th Annual Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.

Diane Bertoli, a Reading Buddies After School and Summer Reading Buddies volunteer, received the 55Plus Yonkers Connections 2014 Annual Mary Hotte Community Service Award.  The 2014 Awards was presented by Mayor Mike Spano on June 17 in the Mayor Reception Room at City Hall.

Scholarships for 17 Yonkers students and Honors for Educators at Annual Scholarship Brunch

17 Yonkers students received scholarships and three educators were honored at JCY-Westchester Community Partners' Sixteenth Annual Scholarship Brunch on Sunday, June 1st at Westchester Manor.  We would like to congratulate to all the students and honorees one more time and thank everyone for coming out on a beautiful Sunday morning to help us celebrate this annual event.
