Two Bennington students, Dominic and Dustin took part in the Vermont Humanities Council's Vermont Reads Wonder at Mount Anthony Union Middle School. Their community received free books and created activities centered on Wonder, Palacio's bestselling, inspiring story about the power, and the importance, of kindness -- in everyone's life. The boys wrote precepts -- words to live by -- to be submitted to Palacio for her new book 365 Days of Wonder. Their precepts were among 75 by children chosen from thousands for inclusion in the book. Dominic and Dustin attended Palacio's recent appearance in Manchester sponsored by VHC and the Northshire Bookstore.
More communities than ever before -- 115 -- are taking part in the statewide read of Wonder. It tells the story of fifth-grader Auggie Pullman. On the inside, Auggie knows he's like any other kid. But due to a congenital birth defect, he stands out in ways nobody wants to. Wonder traces Auggie's journey through his first year in middle school, where he experiences the challenges of being shunned -- and the satisfactions of belonging -- in a world where differences can both set us apart and bring us together.
