Elmwood Community Residence, a local support program for youths, has been recognized for exceptional service by a family advocacy organization.

Families Together in New York State will present Elmwood Community Residence with its 2015 Exceptional Service Provider Award during a conference later this month.

"We're very excited," said Marcie Hamilton, program coordinator at Rehabilitation Support Services Elmwood Community Residence on Elmwood Avenue in Oneonta. The staff was told about the award during its recent weekly meeting, she said.

Elmwood Community Residence is a state licensed eight-bed home that is staffed around the clock and provides mental health and other services, including counseling, life skills instruction and family support, according to the RSS website.

Hamilton said the residence program has 25 employees and two interns and provides services to youths between 12 and 18 years old. Youths from Otsego, Delaware, Chenango and Schoharie, among other counties, are served, she said.

"The staff of the Elmwood Community Residence have wholeheartedly embraced the philosophy of the family peer support role," a statement about the award said. "Many families have benefited from the adoption and implementation of the practices in regard to family driven care."

Families Together, a nonprofit organization, said on its website that strives to establish a voice for families of children and youths with social, emotional and behavioral challenges.

The Families Together award is appreciated also because it recognizes the day-to-day work by staff to help youths on their paths to being reunited with their families or establishing independent living situations, Hamilton said.

She expressed gratitude for professional partnerships with the Family Resource Network Inc. in Oneonta and Families Together in the Southern Tier that nominated the residence. Elmwood Community Residence also works closely with Otsego County Mental Health and the state Office of Mental Health, she said, as well as the Oneonta City School District.
