A FEW CAN DO A LOT
And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. (Judges 7:7)
If we are honest, it is common for us to be impressed with large numbers of people in most endeavors. When we see a crowd at a "Big Ten" football game with numbers pushing 100,000 we marvel at their enthusiasm. Just look at the crowds that are coming out to hear Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders as presidential candidates. And most of us are impressed when we attend mega-churches. The atmosphere can be electric. I am certainly not trying to imply that there is anything wrong with large numbers. To the contrary, God can use large groups in a triumphant way. But as with Gideon and the 300 men, God showed that it was "He," God, that would grant the victory against the Mideanites. God can take a few and do a lot.
In the passage above, the Lord told Gideon that the number he had with him were too many. The Lord said that the people would think that they had defeated the Midianites in their own strength with such a large number of people. Accordingly 22,000 left. Following that, the Lord instructed Gideon to tell them that whoever was afraid could go home. That caused 10,000 more to leave. The Lord said that there were still too many. The Lord said I will select those who will go with you. He used a test that seemed confusing. He told them to go drink from the river. Those who lapped from the river as a dog would be used for the battle. Those who did not, would be sent home.
The message for us is that if we are willing to use what God has given us in His service, it is not necessary to have large numbers of people to accomplish His goals. We should strive to be one of those few. Gideon and the 300 men were victorious over the Midianites. WITH GOD, A FEW CAN DO A LOT!
