THE CROSS AS A MAGNET
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. (John 12:32)
Several years ago, an acquaintance of mine told me that she had a problem with preachers always ending their sermons by going to Calvary's Cross. She believed that the church should be talking more about social programs, etc. rather than always talking about the death and Resurrection of Jesus. I told her that serving our communities is very important, but of most importance is what Jesus did for us by dying on the Cross as a sacrifice for our sins.
In the passage above, Jesus explained that He would be lifted up on a cross. This would be unique because Jews were generally put to death by stoning. He stated that this very act would draw all men unto Him. He did not mean that every one living would come to believe in Him. But He meant that people of every nation, race, and persuasion would be drawn to believe in Him as Savior.
As a child I had a small magnet that I used to draw (pull) small pieces of iron which would attach to it. Some pieces of iron were so far away from the magnet that they were beyond the magnets range. But most of the pieces were drawn to the magnet.
The Cross is a magnet for sinners. As preachers, we go to Calvary's Cross because it is a magnet. Jesus was lifted up on the Cross that we would be drawn to Him. This Sunday, let us attend services, and let us not be upset when the preacher takes us to the Cross.
