A DOUBLE PORTION
And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. (2 Kings 2:9b)
When I was a child I remember my great uncle as a man of great faith. No matter what condition he found himself in, he would always proclaim that God would work things out. That faith allowed him to accomplish things that others would be doubtful about. I have always remembered him as I have pursued having that same degree (and more) of faith in our Lord.
Elijah was a man of great faith. As his ministry on earth was coming to an end he asked his younger protege, Elisha, what shall Elijah do for him? It was then that Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit be upon him. Elijah told Elisha that this would be a hard thing, but that if he were present at Elijah's translation the request would be granted. Shortly after that Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven (2:11). When Elijah had disappeared from view, Elisha took Elijah's cloak and returned to the Jordan River to see if his request had been granted. Immediately the Jordan waters parted after he struck the river.
Whenever I see some of our seasoned saints who have great faith in God, I desire a "double portion" of that faith for myself. God works supernaturally in the faith of His Saints. Great faith brings on great blessings. My prayer for all of you is that God grants you a "double portion" of the faith that comes from His Spirit.
