DOES GOD HAVE SOMETHING AGAINST YOU?
Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. (Rev. 2:4)
Most of us like to have someone say good things about us. When we think of Jesus saying something good about us, that really makes us feel good. I am sure that the congregation in Ephesus was elated to hear about the good things Jesus was saying about them, until Jesus said "nevertheless." It was then that Jesus told them what He had against them. If we are not careful, Jesus can have the same thing against us.
Consider these 3 questions as we ponder our first love:
1) What was our first love?
2) How can we lose our first love?
3) How do we get our first love again?
1)For a Christian, our first love comes when we realize that we are sinners and that Jesus loved us so much that He died in payment for our sins. In so doing we fell in love with Jesus and began to pray more. We began to sing spiritual songs with enthusiasm. We began to desire the preached Word and to give of our time, service, and tithes gladly to the Lord.
2)If we found our first love when we got in trouble, perhaps we lost our first love when the trouble was over. The grace (unmerited favor) that we longed for was no longer our prayer. If we were in need of money when we found God's love, we may have obtained a job that satisfied our financial woes and thought we no longer needed God's love. Or maybe we began to hang around worldly people rather than other believers. Our hearts turned away from God.
3)In order to get our first love back, we must start with prayer and confession. Turn away from our sins and ask God for a brand new start. Get back in church; in Bible study; in service to God, etc. Remember why we first loved God. It was because He first loved us!
