WHERE CAN WE FIND PEACE?
Paul and Silvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and "PEACE." (1 Thessalonians 1:1)
Although many of us are celebrating Juneteenth and Father's Day in a few days, our hearts go out to the families of those who were brutally murdered a couple of days ago in Charleston, South Carolina. The shootings took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the nation's oldest black churches. The suspect was apprehended and certainly it is our hope that justice will prevail in this case. Nine people were killed including the pastor of the church, Rev. Clementa Pinckney; and eight other ministers, leaders, and/or motivators present at Bible Study. They include Tywanza Sanders (a recent college graduate); Susie Jackson (his aunt); Cynthia Hurd (a librarian and minister); Depayne Middleton Doctor (a minister); Ethel Lee Lance (a sexton at the church); Myra Thompson (a visitor from Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church); Rev. Daniel Lee Simmons Sr.(also visiting); and Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (ministerial staff).
In the Biblical passage above, Paul begins by (among other things) wishing the church of the Thessalonians, "PEACE." If there is any place on the earth where people come together seeking peace, it should be the church. You may ask, how could such a terrible act take place in the church. We must remember that evil is always around. Satan is extremely busy and the hearts of many are wicked. We must be vigilant in these perilous times and work for our Lord while it is day.
Keep the families of the victims in your prayers. We know that God is able to wipe away every tear. To you, my brothers and sisters, "Grace and Peace to you always."
