GOOD NEWS FOR SUFFERING SERVANTS
..And she broke the vial and poured it over his head. But some were indignantly remarking to one another. (Mark 14:3b-4a)
The last couple of weeks before Jesus went to the Cross were very eventful. In the passage above, He was at the home of Simon the leper when a woman (Mary) with an alabaster vial came and anointed him with a very expensive ointment. She was being kind to Jesus as she sensed that He would be facing great suffering as He prepared for the Cross. However while she provided comfort to Jesus, Judas complained about her action. There is great tension in this illustration. Mary comforted Jesus while Judas began to betray Him.
Over the years I have found that during some of the most difficult times of my life, there have always been people who were available to comfort me and keep me encouraged. That fact alone has helped me get over some of the rough spots. On the other hand, there have been people who have made my circumstances even more difficult. Suffering for God's people is inevitable. However it is a true blessing to have someone like Mary to encourage and help us when we are down.
This Easter season, remember the Mary's in your lives, while at the same time putting the Judas's behind you. It is true that Jesus had to suffer the week after leaving the house of Simon. But I know that what Mary did for Jesus helped Him through that difficult time. And of course, we know the rest of the story. He eventually rose from the dead early Sunday morning. And as we remember that Good News, we also remember the Good News of what Mary did!
