KEEP DIGGING! Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham... (Genesis 26:18)
As we celebrate Black History Month, I am reminded of all of the progress that Black Americans have made over the years. Having lived during years of extreme segregation I am very cognizant of where we have come from. I still remember shedding tears the night President Obama was elected. The truth is, I did not expect to see a Black President during my life time.
I am however disappointed at the way some individuals have responded to the President, and to Blacks in general since his election. There are many who want to return us to the days of segregation in this country. We must not go backwards, but we must keep going forward. The only way to do that is to keep digging.
In the passage above, we understand that Abraham, during his lifetime, had established many wells which were good for holding water. Water had many uses and was a source of prosperity. After Abraham died, the Philistines began to throw dirt back into the wells and stop them up. Isaac would then dig more wells and his enemies would stop those up as well. Isaac however would continue to dig more wells. He would not be defeated.
Even though there are those people who would like to keep Black Americans from having access to the guarantees of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we will not be stopped. We will dig more wells. We will follow the path that Isaac walked. When others have thrown dirt into our wells, we will move forward and keep digging!
