A TOGETHER BROTHER
So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem and was sitting in his chariot on his way home, reading the prophet Isaiah aloud. (Acts 8:27, 28)
We find that there are many Blacks in the Bible. The Ethiopian Eunuch is one of them. He was truly an honorable man. As we consider some of his qualities, I suggest that he was a
together brother."
First of all, he was a Eunuch. That infers that he practiced abstinence as a result of his situation. In this day and age, that is seldom considered. Scripture should guide us in what is appropriate sexual activity.
Secondly, the Eunuch was a man of great authority and great responsibility. As treasurer over the funds of Candace, he had a position requiring honesty and accountability.
Thirdly, the Eunuch was a man of means. He was riding in his chariot on the way home. A together brother is one who manages his money appropriately and takes care of his responsibilities.
Fourthly, the Eunuch was a church goer. The Bible says that he had been to Jerusalem to worship. A together brother understands the need to be involved in the church. The Bible tells us to forsake not the assembly of ourselves as is the manner of some.
Finally, the text implies that the Eunuch was a hearer and doer of the Word of God. In this passage he was reading the "Word" from the Prophet Isaiah. After Phillip explained it to him, he asked to be Baptized.
Truly, the Eunuch exemplified some qualities that we as Black men should model today. Like the Eunuch, all of us (men) can be "together brothers."
