HONORING THE PAST--INVENTING THE FUTURE
And the Lord said to Joshua: "See! I have given Jericho into your hand, it's king, and the mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once... (Joshua 6:2,3a)
As we conclude our celebration of Black History Month it is important to note that the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. still has not been recognized fully. We are tremendously encouraged by the election, and re-election of President Barack Obama. However, we are still facing pockets of racism on the economic front, in education, and other areas of society. Accordingly, we must keep marching until there is justice for all people.
In the passage above, Joshua was given instructions to march around the city. God told Joshua that Jericho was his, but he would have to march for it. As we honor the past accomplishments of Black people, we must continue to invent the future that will take us to the land of promise. Until we have economic equality, keep marching. Until we have equality of justice in the Courts of our Nation, keep marching. Until we have fairness in the political arenas of our Country, keep marching. Until we have security in our rights to vote, keep marching. Until we have decent housing to live in, keep marching. After all, remember, we are not marching alone, we have The Lord on our side.
