EXCITEMENT FOR THE RIGHT REASON
PRAISE THE LORD (Psalm 149)
Some of you have been to a Texans game when people were full of excitement wearing Texans' jerseys and waving their hands at each successful play. Or perhaps you have been to a Houston Rockets game during a winning season.
Perhaps you have watched "The Price Is Right" and seen the contestants scream and run down the stairs when the host calls out, "Come on down."
Truly there is nothing wrong with any of those situations. However, my question is, "what if we would praise God with that same kind of enthusiasm?" Well in Psalm 149, God's people are doing just that. In that passage, the Israelites had just been victorious in a battle that they could never have won had God not blessed them. They could not hold their peace. Their joy was uncontrollable. They had to praise God. They were not ashamed to express their praise to the Lord. They were not concerned about how others around them perceived them. They knew what God had done for them.
What God had done was greater than any winning touchdown. It was greater than a slam dunk at the buzzer. After all, who gave us the eyes to see that winning touchdown. And who gave the player the legs to jump and slam dunk the ball. Who makes the sun rise in the morning and who holds the stars at night. Who makes you well when you are sick and gives you rest when you are tired.
If you said it was the Lord, you passed the test. Therefore, God is worthy to be praised! So it is okay to be excited about many things, but make sure we are getting excited for the right reason. And if you are excited about the Lord, rest assured, that is the right reason! Hallelujah!
