WHY DO WE GO TO CHURCH?
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him
must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)
Why do you go to Church? Some people go in order to satisfy someone else. Often times, a spouse will go at the insistence of their spouse. Some go in order to meet other people. Some go because they grew up in a home that believed it was the right thing to do. Some go because they are attracted by the singing of the choir. Others go because they like to hear the preacher speak. It is not the purpose of this message to judge anyone else's motives for attending church services. It is my desire to emphasize that first and foremost, we should all go to church to Worship God! And our Worship should be in spirit and in truth.
The background of the passage above depicts a Samaritan woman who meets Jesus at a well and is asked to give Him a drink of water. She realizes that as a Samaritan, she is not expected to have dealings with Jews. In essence, her style of worship is different from His. We often look down at others because their worship style is different from what we expect. Our criteria, however, is not based on God's criteria. Jesus essentially said, I have something that every church should have: Everyone who drinks of this water shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life. He goes on to say, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
Here are 10 things to remember about worship: 1. You should "desire" worship.
2. You should pursue "truth" in worship.
3. You should give thanks to God in worship.
4. You should search your heart in worship.
5. God desires to implant his Word in worship.
6. Worship requires "Reverence."
7. Worship makes us want to serve God.
8. Worship cements our relationship with God.
9. The Holy Spirit works on us in worship.
10. True worship calls for true praise.
The best reason I can give for going to church, is to WORSHIP GOD IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH!
