WORKING WITH NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT!
If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:14, 15)
This past week it was revealed that one of the leading banks in our nation had a computer error that appeared online for many of it's depositors. It showed a balance of zero on many persons' accounts. The next day the error had been rectified, however consider the emotions that customers had when they saw the zero balance on their accounts. I am sure that many had deposited their hard-earned paychecks and were shocked that nothing appeared on the account balances.
I immediately thought about a situation where a person can work all of his/her life and wind up with nothing to show for it. In the verses above, Paul explains that what we do for Christ and His Kingdom will have a lasting effect beyond the grave. Either our work will be satisfactory and come through the fire, or it will be unsatisfactory and burn up. If it is satisfactory, there will be an appropriate reward given. But if not, the person will suffer loss. (Of course the good news is that this is not an issue of salvation)
It is important that all Christians be about our Father's business. As we prepare to celebrate Resurrection Sunday next week, let us remember that what we do for Christ is important. Someday our work records will be evaluated by the Lord; our hope is that our account will not show a zero balance!
