IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON BREAST HEALTH
The American Cancer Society's recommendation yearly mammograms for women 40 and up, along with the continuation of monthly self breast exams and an annual clinical breast exam. Women with a high risk of breast cancer should have a mammogram every year and may be candidates for referral to a breast specialist. Finally, women 20 - 40 years old should continue with monthly self breast exams and have a clinical breast exam during their scheduled gynecological visits.

Here are some important tips from the Mayo Clinic on how to prepare yourself for your breast exam.

What you can do to prepare

  • Write down any symptoms you're experiencing, including any that may seem unrelated to the reason for which you scheduled the appointment.
  • Write down key personal information, including any major stresses or recent life changes.
  • Write down your family history of cancer. Note any family members who have had cancer, including how each member is related to you, the type of cancer, the age at diagnosis and whether each person survived.
  • Make a list of all medications, vitamins or supplements that you're taking.
  • Keep all of your records that relate to your cancer diagnosis and treatment. Organize your records in a binder or folder that you can take to your appointments.
  • Consider taking a family member or friend along. Sometimes it can be difficult to absorb all the information provided during an appointment. Someone who accompanies you may remember something that you missed or forgot.
  • Write down questions to ask your doctor
As always, please be sure to contact your MCWHC physician right away if you have conerns about your breast health.
AUGUST IS NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH

August was designated National Breastfeeding Month in 2011. According to the US Breastfeeding Committee, the goal of National Breastfeeding Month is to:

  • Help pregnant women to learn about the benefits of breastfeeding for their babies and themselves.
  • Teach mothers to breastfeed.
  • Encourage mothers to talk to their maternity care providers about plans to breastfeed.
  • Support mothers to have time and flexibility to breastfeed.
  • Encourage mothers to ask for help with breastfeeding when needed.

At MCWHC we believe it is important to educate women about their option to breastfeed. We recognize that breast feeding can be difficult and nursing a newborn every few hours can be exhausting. However, it shouldn't be painful. If you are struggling, please talk to your doctor or a lactation consultant. We are here to help you.
