WOMEN'S HEALTH PREVENTATIVE SERVICES COVERED UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

woman_reading.jpgIf you have a new health insurance plan as of 2013, or if your plan was started on or after September 23, 2010, the Affordable Care Act requires that many women's healthcare preventive and OB services be covered in full by your insurance without you having to pay a copay, coinsurance, or have the service be applied to your deductible. Please note that this applies only when these services are delivered by a provider in your insurance plan's network.

Certain types of insurance plans are excepted from the requirements, so MCWHC highly recommends that you check with your individual insurance plan to see what may be covered under the Affordable Care Act.

5 TIPS FOR SPRING CLEANING YOUR HEALTH

woman_vaca.jpgSpring Cleaning. We clean out closets, wash windows, and let the fresh air in our homes. What about our bodies and mind? Here are 5 tips to help you spring clean your health.

1. Make a list of goals for better health. Even if you weren't able to stick to your New Year's Resolutions, Spring is the perfect time for a fresh start. Write down your physical, emotional and mental health goals and put them where you will see them daily. They can be as simple as taking a brisk daily walk, scheduling lunch with a friend, or getting a babysitter. All of these steps can help improve our health.

2. Schedule necessary health appointments. While the cold is still here, the snow has melted making it easier to get to our necessary health appointments. As recommendations can vary, please speak with your doctor to determine if you should schedule the following exams or screenings based on your personal and family health history, age, lifestyle, and current medical condition:
lady-stretching-white.jpg
  • Pelvic Exam
  • Cervical Cancer Screening
  • Blood pressure check
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Flu vaccination
  • Shingles vaccination
  • Bone Mineral Density Test
  • Mammogram
  • Colonoscopy
  • STD screening
  • Vision screening
  • Dental check up
Healthy heart 3. Weigh the healthy food options in your home. Clean out your pantry and refrigerator and fill with fresh Spring produce. Aim at imroving your nutrition and filling your plate with healthy alternatives. To motivate you to adhere to your current activity plan or to possibly increase it, check your body mass index here to see if you fall within a healthy weight range.
watering-can-child.jpg
4. Get outdoors and plant some flowers. This will help to improve both your physical and mental health. Watching your labor truly bloom can bring a great source of joy. If time doesn't permit, buy some flowers and put them where you will see them throughout the day.

5. Give yourself a break. As women we often find that we are taking care of family, friends, coworkers, pets, etc. and seldom putting ourselves first. This Spring season, renew your commitment to yourself; put your needs on the to do list. This alone will help motivate you to create a healthier lifestyle for yourself.
