Holiday Edition 2012

Happy Holidays!

We know everyone is getting ready to enjoy and observe the holidays. We want to reach out and say have a safe and happy holiday season!

We are looking forward to having an exciting season and getting off to an energetic start in 2013.

The ORA Board is expanding. Let's maximize our organizational effectiveness.

The Front Burner will publish every two months, beginning in February. Look for it on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Other announcements affecting our members will go out periodically as they surface.

Oakland just keeps getting better and the food scene is a big catalyst in this effort.

Remember about Oakland: To Know It Is To Love It!

Under the Table

Bits & Bites...The Holiday Season is here and a number of ORA members are having special menus for the holidays.

The Daily Special...To ORA members, we could possibly band together to offer something on a special day or we could do something to celebrate in one of our Business Improvement Districts. If you are interested in doing this, please contact Brandon Brooks, ORA Membership Rep and we will help coordinate and get the word out.

Seasonings...Not an ORA restaurant? Be sure to visit one of our member restaurants during the holidays.

"Yay!" for Uptown! Forbes selected Uptown Oakland as #9 on a list of America's Best Hipster Neighborhoods.

Ripped From The Headlines...Diablo Magazine's Weekly Dish reports "Another Romney has some better news...Romney Steele is opening The Cook and Her Farmer, a "cafe, oyster and wine bar" in Old Oakland's Swan's Market. This is the same market where the wildly popular Cosecha opened last year and where Sarah Kimon's anticipated Afro-Caribbean and Rosamunde Sausage Grille are expected to open before the end of the year."

ORA To The Rescue...Have you had your Ansul System go off? Thanks to the ORA network, one of our members was guided through a mini-disaster with minimal downtime...the power of networking!

Food Trucks...An investigative series segment on KCBS radio, Doug Sovern reporting, on the health safety of food trucks, which also commented on the sensitivity between brick & mortar restaurants. Mark Everton was featured, sharing that what brick & mortar restaurants want to see is enforcement of the rules and a level playing field.

Extra Extra!...Available space for lease at 160 41st, near Piedmont Avenue.

Saving $$$...Thanks ORA for the BMI/ASCAP Seminar. Saved me a few bucks -- and a lot of unnecessary hassle. Those of us who attended got $425/hour legal advice for my favorite price...free! I didn't like all I heard, however, the discussion equipped me to be able to move forward much more well-versed and helped me save a few bucks. Thank you, ORA!

Until the next time, make sure you check out what's Under The Table.

Moved From Q4 to 2013...The first-ever and much anticipated Chef's Only Roundtable will be scheduled early in the year.

Managing Your Reputation...March 7th, 2pm: C'mon...There is no way you can tell me you haven't had the Yelp reviewer who crucified you, when you might have been "off" but not to the degree they wrote. Let's look at strategies to have a balanced voice for upholding our reputations, considering today's Social Media landscape. Not just credentialed critics reviewing our food and service, but anyone with a smartphone. Join us the first Thursday in March -- March 7th -- 2pm at the Chamber Board Room, 475 14th Street. RSVP Amanda (Events Coordinator).

Giving Thanks!

Let's make sure the Oakland food scene continues to grow, thrive and remains in the vanguard of reshaping the image of Oakland!

Happy Holidays!
