Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

Visitors Day November 25th.  In an effort to grow our membership, we are asking Club members to invite a potential member to our meeting on the 25th.  Club Member Mark Amacher will be giving a presentation on the JFK assassination.  Mark served at the funeral procession of John Kennedy as a Marine, and was featured in last Sunday's Argus/Dispatch.

Please reach out to a business or colleague who would make a good addition to Kiwanis, and show them what we are all about!  A pdf flyer is available if you wish to send via mail or email, just contact me, Daryl, for a copy.

The Bow Tie Challenge continues.  Club Member Craig Knobloch has thrown down the gauntlet!  After realizing his initial idea for a beard growing contest was perhaps unfair to the women in the club, the ever dapper Craig is throwing down a bow tie challenge to the club.  If you own a bow tie, wear it to this next or an upcoming meeting.  He will contribute $1 for every member to the club.  The real challenge may be if you know how to tie it!  Only two members rose up to the challenge last week.

Holiday Cheese Sale.  Tom Plechaty has several cheese packages available for sale, a great gift for the Holidays.  See Tom at a meeting, or contact him to make arrangements.  Last year, the club made almost $1500 on this fundraiser!

The Opening Act

Club President, Zach Edwards, called the meeting of November 18 to order.  Providing the entertainment again was that Tornado of the Piano Keys, Jonathan Turner.

By the time you get this newsletter, you will have missed the opportunity to think about going to the next Interclub with the Moline group at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1330 - 13th Street, on Tuesday, November 19.

Tom Plechaty informed us that today was the last day to order cheese for delivery by Thanksgiving.

Chris Elsberg had a number of points to take up with us, including the Thanksgiving dinner at the Martin Luther King Center where our Club will be assisting on November 24, Salvation Army bell-ringing on December 6, and passing the hat, a custom re-instituted today at the meeting.

President Zach informed us that Coats for Kids was still in the planning phase, since there have been some personnel changes at Old Navy.

Zach also reminded us that November 25 would be our special meeting for prospective members.

Guests included members of the Alleman High School and Rock Island High School Key Clubs and the Jordan Builders Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, which it graciously donated to the Jordan Builders Club at the direction of Gary Miner.  Jud Briggs won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, which he managed not to win.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Rock Island High School varsity boys basketball coach, Thom Sigel.  He began by discussing last year's performance where Rocky ran into the Edwardsville High School buzz saw.  He continued his presentation by analyzing and discussing his current players and, where applicable, their collegiate plans.  Currently, he has three team members who are laid up with football injuries, but it's hoped that they'll be back in action by midyear.  Coach Sigel went on to give his predictions on how Big 6 teams will be performing and some of the early games scheduled for the club.  He summarized the team as being very close-knit, made up of good shooters, and short.
